My in-laws have died, and one of their sons is demanding sensitive documents... what are we legally obligated to provide?

2023.06.09 16:32 LibertyPrime-77 My in-laws have died, and one of their sons is demanding sensitive documents... what are we legally obligated to provide?

Long story short... my wife's parents have both died, and one of her brothers who never has had any contact with the family now all of a sudden is texting her and demanding information and documents.
My wife's brother (whom I'll call B1) has been the kind of person whom I've only seen or heard from three times since we got married over 20 years ago. One was at the wedding, the other two times were at each of the funerals for their parents. My mother-in-law used to cry over the fact that he never would call or visit her, ever... except for times when he needed money. His wife is also the kind of person who is manipulative and had him put in jail once, and my in-laws used most of their savings to bail him out. They even bought a car for them, and when it broke down, B1's wife wanted them to provide a replacement car. She also complained that when my wife's grandmother died, they weren't included in the will (but none of the grandchildren were, either). She has always been the type of person with a sense of entitlement.
As soon as my mother-in-law died last year, B1 started asking about how much money was left for them in the will, even before the funeral proceedings were over. My wife and her other brother (I'll call B2) explained to him that their remaining funds were necessary for my father-in-law to live on; he was in assisted living and required the help of memory care, which was quite expensive. After the funeral, B1 and his wife then went through my mother-in-law's belongings at her home, trashing the place as they took anything of value they could find, and left without even shutting the front door as they left town. Among the valuables they took were my father-in-law's military awards from the Vietnam War. B2 and my wife had previously told him that they wanted to display his medals at his funeral, when he would eventually die. Despite multiple attempts to contact B1 and have the medals returned, he never responded. Our assumption is that he sold them for money.
Recently, my father-in-law died, and when B1 was asked to come to the funeral and bring the medals, he claims that he looked everywhere but couldn't find them. At the funeral, he again asked about how much was left in the inheritance. Now, my wife had received power of attorney for her parents before they died, to make decisions regarding their medical care and assist with paying their bills, etc. Once her father died, she and B2 thought it would be wise to consult with a lawyer to handle the will.
B1 has been asking for documents about my father-in-law, including his social security number, some military documents, etc., so he can "learn more about his life". It turns out that B1 has the same name as his father, and our suspicion is that he wants to have his SSN so that he can try to obtain funds from the trust before it is properly distributed. Last night he sent my wife a text, saying that she must send him a copy of the trust, a copy of the power of attorney, and the lawyer's information, for him and his lawyer, within 12 hours. (At the time of this post, this means we have about half an hour remaining to do that, haha.) Of course, my wife is concerned that he might try to steal their father's identity and steal money from the account. I have suggested she ask the lawyer working on the trust what she is legally obligated to share with her brother. For what it's worth, she doesn't even have the trust right now, which she says is hundreds of pages long and the lawyer currently has it, so she couldn't provide that to B1 anyway.
What, if anything, are we legally obligated to give her brother at this time?

2023.06.09 16:12 rollersky Why left-wingers should be in favour of Freedom of speech

An actor everybody is pretty much somewhat familiar with, Rowan Atkinson that plays Mr Bean recently made an about 10 minute press release speech and statement. It was directly concerning the freedom of the people of the United Kingdom to merely express themselves, to perform the very human act of communicating and sharing. https://youtu.be/xUezfuy8Qpc
The fact that the U.K is unfortunately by law a tyrannical state that dishes out criminal punishment to anyone who says anything anyone finds offensive, no literally they actually have laws that get you arrested for posting normal song lyrics and other mundane normal usage posts. It's from a recent yet slightly older law from 25 years ago, and it enables anyone to be charged with hate speech for saying or since the advent of social media posting anything anyone ever finds offensive.
I wish it were otherwise but unfortunately these authoritarian tyrannical laws are also present... in Australia and you have probably forgotten but they were on full display in 2019... when the Pharmaceutical companies became the wealthiest and most profitable companies on Earth... the same companies that sponsor Political Parties,... and Television advertisements,... Social Media companies (like the one your on now) and literally run the tests and produce all medical scientific papers (studies, theories, hospitals, physicians on payroll, fund entire hospitals and livelihoods... etc. etc.) The best example I can remember of the absolute Tyranny Australia was under is a case whereby a pregnant women in Victoria was arrested for writing on a Facebook post that she was against lockdowns and supported the protests against them... the Police came and arrested her... for 'Hate Speech'... it luckily enough got picked up media companies (TV stories and articles). Luckily. So the police, after dragging this pregnant woman kicking and screaming out of her apartment (not exactly literally) let her go without charge. Only out of the fear of public ridicule and hatred that would have emerged. She was lucky that happened. Very very lucky. And there is no way she should have had to have been 'lucky' for merely making a post on Facebook. Had it not been picked up by media companies, that pregnant woman could have still been in prison to this very day (though possibly and likely house arrest or community service).
America simply does not have this problem as written into the very constitution as the 1st Amendment to their constitution by the founding fathers in all of their wisdom, intelligence, good faith and if your religious like they where, filled with divine enlightenment wrote it such that the Government in America has no ability to write any law to restrict people's rights to express themselves (Freedom of Speech), restrict the press (because back then they lacked smart phones, social media and all modern technology, which should be obvious but perhaps it is not and is difficult for people today to even begin to imagine life back then despite it being very loosely similar to today's world) and finallu restrict people's religious freedoms (written in reverse order to this because they were all wise God loving, humble, noble and brave men.
America's 1st Amendment is the only Freedom of Speech law written into its very constitution in the entire world, it is the reason that America is referred to as 'Land of the Free' and the second part of that phrase, 'Home of the Brave.'. As for protests, peaceful assembly had always been constitutionally protected, not violent assembly so riots and revolution is still very much illegal and is met with lethal counter force every time. [As a side note, if peaceful assembly fails to prevent America becoming a Tryrannical State, then the 2nd Amendment is the fail-safe. As the wisdom of the founding fathers literally argued and intendeded]
Australia does not have that phrase and frankly I feel that every Australian that knows that, feels a deep unspoken, subconscious shame over that fact and far more importantly that all Australians simply do not have the constitutional right to even speak their minds freely, as every human being alive desires.
As Rowan Atkinson stated 'Hate Speech' is not real. It is a term used to silence, censor and remove power from whomever those in power disagree and dislike or are offended by. There are seemingly endless examples from history of the evil deeds of enactment of those disliked by existing powers for example, Galileo (ostracised and persecuted by the church and all religious folk for merely stating he believed that the sun was the center of the Galaxy and not the Earth), Nikola Tesla (defamed by the work of Tomas Edison and countless people trying to claim his inventions as their own by way of patent theft and lies for the purpose of advertising like don't by an American organisation NPR over the discovery of radio), (Jesus Christ himself by his crucifixion by my Ancestors, the Romans) and as the last example, the NAZI's by locking up any intellectuals that disagreed or dared critisize any of their doctrine and propoganda, their torture of anyone condemned for death by way of countless sadistic and grotesque torture methods, and some though quite few, for scientific discovery purposes, their burning of the books followed in time by bodies, and lastly their brutal slaughter of the Jews, no evidence of wrongs but only stirring words and speeches from their beloved demagogue, Adolf Hitler and gigantic amounts of absolute propoganda distributed to the masses, orchestrated by NAZI Propoganda Chief Joseph Goebbels and his team. (Which every highschool student should have, though potentially didn't, have already learned from Highschool History class, at least in every Public School, Private Schools may be permitted a different curriculum.) Offensive caused by speech has only 1 solution. More Free speech, Rowan Atkinson a famous actor that has probably more wealth than this entire subreddit conveyed this message, and it would seem as an absolute truth as far as I can tell.
I have written this in hopes of sparking and pasing wisdom and knowledge into whoever needs to have read this. And hopefully you will pass this type of message on yourself from now on. Australia needs the Right of Freedom of Speech written into its very constitution. As demonstrated during COVID19 it needed it years ago but now even more than ever.
And to those that would say it will do nothing but allow mass disinformation, manipulation and mislead people, I would say this, history has proven you absolutely dead wrong on that statement and sentiment, the only solution to offense from speech is more Free Speech and if you silence, censor or try more modern trends of the same kind known as deplatforming or cancelling, then all you do, all you achieve, everything you are trying to stop will only be made stronger, more resilient and more popular then ever before. As examples, take Jesus Christ, he has the Roman equivalent of being hung drawn and quartered, he was crucified, publicly executed like a lamb to the slaughter to send a message of absolute obedience being required to the rest of the herd. Yet because of that Christianity exploded and has been far more viral than COVID19 or any viral video has ever been to date. And for modern times look at Tucker Carlson, deplatformed by pressure from Pharmaceutical companies, lawsuits from shitty voting machine companies and pathologically idealogically fanatic ex employees in lawsuits. Tucker Carlsons show on Fox was the most popular show on Fox News and it drew in about 2 million people every night to watch it... after he was fired... is now getting 35+ million on the regular after he started up on Twitter. I do so imagine that actuall that will be an understatement in the coming future as currently he's on his 2nd episode ever. The 'Streisand Effect' in full unbridled, unstoppable force.
Every Australian deserves the right to express themselves freely, meaning free of all Government persecution and all possible Government and legal persecution. This is and has always been a left wing idea, as the rule of Tyrants; Dictators, kings Pharaohs, Caesar's, Shoguns, Kahns, Lords, Nobles Knights and Emperors have always, always been majority perpetuated by people with conservative temperaments, whereas free thinkers, creative and imaginative people are the minority of people perpetuating the rule of Tyrants.
We here in Australia critisize China for authoritarianism and tyranny when there is weakness in our own ranks. 'Those in glass houses should not throw stones' - some famous person, 'never lay cannonfire on your enemy with a glass cannon' -me. Western countries, especially our home country Australia's true colours, true laws and beliefs of of Australian people were broadcasted for the world to see during covid. And they paint a very dark authoritarian picture of our nation to the world, something China is more than smart enough to take advantage of... and much to our chagrin they are and have been since Covid ended for us. Chinese propoganda, their Television Channels, all Chinese State OWNED... all of them constantly bring up how Australia, England and America all were even worse if not just as bad as China was during Covid19, and as the best and most convincing propoganda always is... its harrowingly mostly true. (Only, partly mostly thankfully) but domestic Chinese TV isn't the most important propoganda outlet taking the easy win by using our sins in their propoganda... no, that would be the Confucius Institute in Australian Universities. China's unelected ruling communist party (communist in name only these days, just a full bull authoritarian tyranny is their ideology nowadays) main propoganda outlet in Australia is a Chinese University group called the Confucius Institute (I could be wrong about the name and I've spent too long writing this to be bothered to look it up). They target young, impressionable Chinese men and women when they are studying abroad in Australia's universities, our most popular young adult Chinese attraction, I dare say, maybe even 'Global young adult Asian attraction' as I once met a man from Tibet who said exactly that in a course I had to take for my construction job (white card). The Confucius Institute goal is promote CCP propoganda via demonising the way Australia and all Western countries are so that as few young people ever believe in the ideals of Democracy and want to return to China, such that the CCP can perpetuate its tyrannical rule over China forever. Idealogically brainwash 'loose ends' - Mafia Terminology if you understand. They thanks to what happened to Australia under the Lib/Nats Coalition 2019 to late 2022 they distribute and spread half truths about Australia and countless other lies about every part and aspect of life in Australia as well as pay members of their organisation to organise pro China protests, (sign holders and chanters) in Australian Universities, footage of this circulated sparsely in Australian media and articles during 2014-2018 roughly though probably a bit before too. They actively seek out and target specifically ethnically Chinese and often try to emotionally blackmail them, incite fear into them, speak exclusively their propoganda to then and rarely but almost certainly literally blackmail them using the threat of violence, torture and death of their families back in China. Naturally there's no direct evidence of that claim except for Chinese Father and Husband in England that was blackmailed (husband of high ranking shipping Port official wife) they abducted his wife and child and forced the wife read a script to the husband over the phone (utilised emotional and physical blackmail and just directly veiled and unveiled threats, I recommend you look up interviews from the husband) and if you look up the articles of the Confucius Institute from IDK 2011-2018 and have the ability to interpret from what the articles found you can tell the Confucius Institute, only has 1 purpose, to try and perpetuate the CCP's rule of China and stop and protest against their rule, specifically stopping Tiananmen Square type protests from ever happening again. The Tianamen Square Massacre was a global well known proverbial black eye to China that severely hampered every nation's diplomatic relations with China for close to half a century, and the CCP didn't like that as even Tyrants love swimming in money, also the CCP loves stealing technology through trade espionage, China's MAG Lev trains and their entire car industry is built off stolen technology from Western companies dumb enough to deal with companies owned by the CCP. Naturally the Chinese who have been or are being 'convinced' by the Confucius Institute are always the biggest promoters of Anti Freedom ideas, especially the death of Freedom of Speech via hate speech crime laws such as: incitement of violence laws (Victoria mainly), offensive Tweets, Facebook Posts, Instagram Posts,,, Goddamn Reddit posts all hopefully being made illegal and the Liberals God awful rich persons almost exclusive digital world referee, The new E-Safety Commisioner. And like all the God awful Tyrant Commissioner's from TV shows and books if the E-Safety commisoner ever... EVER gets in the hands of the Liberals again it will be used against the normal people of Australia to beat the collective will of normal free thinking Australian's to the ground if not to death. Only complete dumbass Liberal Supporters usually dumb beer drinking sky news watchers (usually fossils) and Young Adult Chinese University Students support ANY of the laws and speech referees I just mentioned.
Again please war h the video I linked at the tiop and if the Politcal State of the U.K interests you for whatever reason then I recommend: Count Dankular (his second channel) the first person in Scottish History tried and found guilty of 'Hate Speech'... from a freakin comedy video. Where he's mocking the very thing they charged him for supporting [funny pug salute video as a direct hint]), Jonathan Pie (excellent wit, fantastic satirist and insult wordsmith wizard, also very yelly, I like him) and lastly full Aussie Jordan Shanks himself, the namesake of this subreddit, FriendlyJordies. Whenever he actually gets round to covering the U.K his analysis is excellent.
Also a guy from YouTube channel Sargon of Akkad though... fair warning, his videos are really boring but he is quite very articulate.
All Australians deserve the Right of Freedom of Speech. And unfortunately, on Reddit in particular I see far too many Tyrannical Speech Law sympathisers which I personally find truly disgusting and as much as I hate the authoritarian ideas you spout, I will defend your right to say and spread them. If your a real FriendlyJordies fan or agree with his ideas and rhetoric than I already know you support all Australians Right of 'Free Speech'.

2023.06.09 16:09 burnside38 TIFU by donating $15,041 to a poor community in Bangladesh instead of the $150 donation I intended + UPDATE

I am NOT OP. Original post by u/lazybear90 in tifu
Hi all. This is my first time posting here, please let me know if I made any mistakes.
Trigger warnings: none I think
Mood spoiler: overwhelmingly wholesome
Original post: May 26, 2023
This happened in February of last year, but my friends have been telling me I need to post this story online … so here goes nothing:
My wife and I (both 31 years old, at the time) moved into a new three-unit apartment building in San Francisco. One of our neighbors is a 70-something year old retired veteran, we’ll call him Joe. For context, Joe is a white American guy and he’s also a devout Hindu priest. One day I run into Joe in my hallway, and he tells me about this charity he manages for a community in Bangladesh. I wanted to support my neighbor and the charity, so I ask Joe to send me the GoFundMe link.
The next day at work, I go on the GoFundMe page and donate $150. Or so I thought. Moments later, I get a text on my phone warning me of an unusually large transaction on my credit card. I’m confused and swipe to open the text message. It says I have made a payment of $15,041 to GoFundMe. Immediately I’m sweating. How could I have donated FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS? I spend the next 10-15 minutes retracing my steps, and finally I realize my credit card starts with the numbers 4 and 1. It seems I had accidentally started typing my credit card information while my cursor was still in the donation box, and just like that 150 became 15041. Yikes.
I call GoFundMe’s support line in a panic, and when I finally connect with a human I explain what happened. “No need to worry”, he tells me, they will initiate a refund of the transaction which should process in 3-7 business days. That’s a huge relief. But then I ask the agent if the charity will be able to see the donation on the GoFundMe page until it is refunded. “What do you mean?” the agent asks me. “What do YOU mean what do I mean?” was my response. “Will they be able to see the $15,041 donation?!” Unfortunately, yes, the agent tells me. They will be able to see it until the refund process is complete. I tell him that’s a big problem, as the entire GoFundMe had hardly raised that much at that point. Surely they will notice their fundraiser doubling overnight?
My plan was to knock on Joe’s door the following morning to give him the full story, so that he could pass it along to his contacts in Bangladesh. But when I woke up the next morning, I looked at my phone and saw I had 40+ notifications on Facebook. Someone had sent me a friend request, had liked many of my old posts, and had sent me many messages. Immediately I was concerned when I saw that the individual messaging me had a Hindu name, but I never could have imagined what I saw when I opened his first message…
The man had sent me a video of himself from Bangladesh, surrounded by dozens of impoverished and hungry people holding bags of food, thanking me BY NAME (Michael) for my generous donation. A big round of applause for Michael. At this point, I’ve leapt out of my bed and I’m pacing. Part of me wants to scream, part of me wants to crack up laughing. I start swiping through the man’s messages, and it is picture after picture after picture of poor Bangladeshis thanking me for my kind donation. Literally hundreds of photos of frail, elderly, disabled, and malnourished individuals holding signs with my name. Thank you, Michael. Thank you, Michael. I've uploaded a portion of the video, and a few photos, for you guys to see here: https://imgur.com/gallery/tROXniV
Editor's note: Photo descriptions
1: a screenshot of the GoFundMe page with Michael's $15,041 donation made and highligted.
2: a video of people holding food bags, and a man in the middle saying thank you to Michael.
3: two men with their food bags, with a sign that says "Thank you dear Michael for your kind help".
4: eight people with their food bags and a sign that says "Thanks dear Michael for your kind".
5: a lot of people gatherered, holding their hands in the air with their food bags at their feet.
6 through 11 contain different people with their food bags and one of the previous signs.
12: several people gathered for a selfie taken by the man from the video who thanks Michael.
13: same picture as 5.
14 and 15: more people with their food bags and the same signs.
Needless to say, I couldn’t live with myself just donating $150 after seeing how the community responded to the $15,041. I decided the least I could do was to add a zero, and so I donated $1,500 once the original donation was refunded. The charity’s host was incredibly gracious and understanding, and he explained to me that $1,500 goes very far in Bangladesh for urgent food relief. Here is the charity’s new GoFundMe link if you want to check it out: https://www.gofundme.com/f/urgent-food-relief-assistance-in-bangladesh
Ultimately I think the whole experience was a win-win. I helped a great cause, and I got a funny story out of it.
TL;DR: Some impoverished folks in Bangladesh thought I had sent them $15,041 but it was an accident and I had to request a refund for most of it.
EDIT: Many are asking why there is no $1,500 donation listed in the fund’s donation history. I donated to an old campaign link for the same charity. It is readily findable online, if you feel compelled to search for it.
Update post: June 2nd, 2023 (one week later)

14: A screenshot of the original GoFundMe page showing the $1,500 donation Michael ended up doing. With this text "My original $1,500 in donations on the old campaign page, since a lot of people were looking for this".
Caption: Some people were looking in the donation history on the campaign's new link to verify I actually made the $1,500 donation I claimed to have made in my story. The $1,500 donation (pictured) was made via the OLD campaign link
Last week, I posted one of my life's most embarrassing stories on TIFU, about the typo that caused me to donate $15,041 to a Bangladesh charity instead of the $150 donation I intended. At the time of my Reddit post, the charity’s latest campaign had approximately $12,500 from 26 total donations. My neighbor, the organizer of the charity, had told me the charity was running on fumes and looking to cancel some of its programs.
Of course I had hoped some Redditors might read my story and decide to help the charity, but I NEVER could have expected the overwhelming reaction nor the incredible generosity of the Reddit community. “Watch this post blow up, and a shit ton of Redditors donate” was one of the first comments the post received on Reddit. And that is exactly what happened. Over Memorial Day Weekend, the charity raised over $55,000 from over 2,100 new donations.
On Saturday, I had to explain Reddit to my 77-year-old neighbor and to the charity’s team leader in Bangladesh (he called it Rebbit, as you can see in my pics). They were absolutely blown away by the reaction – truly they view it as a miracle. I received the following message from my neighbor: “Without a doubt, this is the biggest wave of support to arrive since we started! Doors that were closed can now be opened. Plans that were parked can now be put in motion. There is much we can now accomplish. All due to your idea to post (in a funny way) on what happened a while ago. Abundant resources require an equal level of responsibility. No less. I am committed to see that these funds are applied carefully and continue to make a difference to those who need it most.”
Sometimes things just seem to work out for a reason. One Reddit donor commented, “Michael may have screwed up his donation, but hopefully his TIFU on Reddit has fixed that somewhat.” Thanks to Reddit, the Bangladesh community will receive roughly 4x the amount of the original donation I had refunded.
TL;DR: My embarrassing story of an accidental $15,041 donation (and refund of $13,541) goes viral on Reddit, Redditors raise over $55,000 for needy in Bangladesh!
EDIT: Holy cow someone just donated $5,000! Thank you, Anonymous!! Hopefully you didn’t mean to donate $500… it could happen to anyone. Charity link in comments and original post, if anyone else is interested!

Editor's note: If this gets posted I will be really happy that my first BORU post was this level of wholesome.
Reminder - I am not the original poster.

Abstract

In web3 an identity is represented by an address rather than a username or password. When a web3 entity try to communicate with other entities using web2 social media platforms, they find it difficult because of this difference in identity. We at notiboy are building applications that will make communication more effective for algofam. Our notification service helps the web3 projects to effectively communicate with end-user addresses. As a next step, we would like to build a web3 specific chat application that will facilitate address-to-address communication. This application will be integrated into our web and mobile apps. APIs will be made available that can be integrated by the web3 projects to provide a in-app chat experience for their end-users.

Team

AP - CEO. I have 7 years of experience in sales and marketing of mobile handsets for multiple MNCs in India. I have been an active member in the Algorand community since August 2021 and is involved with the Angry Penguins NFT project.
Deepak -CTO. Deepak has a Masters in computer science and has worked in product design & development for leading payment companies in the world. He is well versed in the Algorand smart contracts and SDKs and has been leading the design and development of Notiboy project.

Experience with Algorand

We have been building the Notiboy project and won 2nd prize during the 1st Green House Hackathon. We are one of the 6 teams that graduated from 1st cohort of the Algorand APAC accelerator.
Website: https://notiboy.com/

Roadmap

1)We intend to build a basic address-to-address chat application and integrate it into our current application.

2)Release apis as a service so that projects can integrate them.

Benefits for the community

1) Community members can interact with each other by using an algorand address as their identity. Currently, members have to expose their web2 identities, like email-id or phone numbers via a web2 platform to interact with other members or web3 projects.
2) Web3 projects on algorand can integrate our APIs to their application thus providing an in-app chat experience for
their end-users.

2023.06.09 15:29 aznanon1 Fell victim today and being blackmailed

Hey everyone, it’s my first post on reddit and this community looks like it’s supportive and helpful.
Here’s what happened: 1. Matched with girl on Tantan Asian dating app and they wanted to move the chat to WhatsApp so I stupidly give her my real number and we start chatting there 2. Things get sexual and they tell me that I can remote control their vibrator if I download this dodgy looking Chinese app. I give it a go, download it but it doesn’t work. I suspect this is where they managed to get into my phone contacts because they ended up with a list of all my contacts and their numbers. 3. App doesn’t work so they suggest to do a quick video call for some mutual masturbating and there’s a person or video on the other end being played 4. It’s all recorded from their end and they send me a list of my contacts and a bunch of videos and screenshots and request payment to delete 5. They request payment through remitly app but I decided to block them on WhatsApp, they don’t have any other form of contact with me as I don’t have social media 6. They add me with other numbers and threaten me and send screenshots of them sending the material to some of my contacts and keep calling me. WhatsApp does not block unknown numbers from messaging you or calling you so they do it multiple times after I block a few numbers. 7. It’s been a few hours now and they haven’t messaged and the people they showed that they sent it to haven’t reached out either to let me know they’ve received anything
Just wanted to know if they still have access to my contact list or phone if I’ve deleted the dodgy app they made me download and if people have had similar experience with these Chinese scammers and what their next steps may be.
Thank you all for reading. Going to try move on and deal with this day by day

Be Wary of MetaMask Scams
~“MetaMask will never send you unsolicited emails.”
Cone morning all,
I just wanted to put out a friendly PSA (public service announcement) for the group to stay vigilant. This morning I received a scam e-mail claiming to be MetaMask support asking me to update my wallet or face being locked out of my account. It stated I had to update it by June 11th or my funds will be lost (illegally short window).
The scam email is well done and not easily discernible but the one give away is the email it was sent from is not a MetaMask.io email. I hopped over to the MetaMask website to seek advice and found this article. Screenshots attached.
I just wanted to raise awareness of this scam as most of our community BitCone guides and members use MetaMask wallet. Some of us may be new to this crypto world and not as experienced in identifying scams. It is important for us as a conemunity to support each other and try to prevent as much loss of CONE as we can!

Please UpCone this message so it gets more visibility in our fellow Cone Head’s feeds.

Stay Safe,
Lady Lucks Man

P.S. I pulled this info off the University of Buffalo website.

2023.06.09 14:03 the-third-person Lost Calls

Earlier this year, I got a new cell phone. My old one was getting unreasonably slow, and I was way overdue for an upgrade. And, if I’m being honest, I was tired of not having all of the cool new features that my friends had. So I went online, browsed around and found a fantastic new phone I could use to make all of my friends jealous, at least until they upgraded again.
My new phone’s great. It’s got twice the storage of my old phone, it’s running the newest OS, and basically just has all the bells and whistles. Top notch cameras, hotspot mode—you name it, this phone can do it. It’s even got built-in voice-to-text on voicemails, so that when someone leaves me a message, I can just read what they had to say instead of having to actually dial in and listen to it. It’s not perfect, but it gives me the gist of the message, at least. Given that most of the voicemails I get are robocalls asking me to vote for some candidate, or scams telling me that the IRS is coming to arrest me, this feature has saved me a bunch of time.
A few weeks ago, however, I got a voicemail transcript that just said “Hurt.” One word, nothing else. The timer bar showed that the call was over three minutes long, though, which was particularly weird. Obviously, I played that one back to hear what was going on. Had the caller just said “hurt” and then hung around on the line? Had I been butt-dialed, and just caught the very beginning of a conversation at the end? It wasn’t from a number I recognized, but that didn’t necessarily mean I didn’t know the caller.
Except there turned out not to be a caller. I listened to the entire voicemail, all three minutes and forty-two seconds of it, and it was completely silent. I mean, there was a little bit of static, enough so that I knew that my phone hadn’t just cut off, but there wasn’t even the sort of background noise you get when you’ve been called from someone’s purse or pocket. There was nothing, and there definitely wasn’t anyone saying “hurt.”
I listened to the voicemail twice more before deleting it. It was weird, but I didn’t give it any more thought after that. Technology does strange things sometimes, you know? Makes it interesting. I used to have an iPod that would skip songs it didn’t like. It made me laugh. I appreciated that it had a bit of personality.
But then a few days later, I got another long, blank voicemail. This time, the transcript said, “You there? Helm.” This one was a minute and six seconds long, and just like the first one, there was absolutely nothing on it even remotely like a voice. I closed myself in a silent room, turned the volume all the way up and pressed my ear to the phone, and there was nothing. Just that quiet static, like a white noise machine playing from the next room over. Not even any real variations in that sound. Nothing.
The day after that, there was another one. This one was two minutes long and it said “miss you,” according to the transcript. I downloaded the voicemail that time and played it back on my computer. Not only could I still not hear anything, but the spectrogram showed absolutely no spikes. There just wasn’t any sound in there, but my voicemail was convinced there were words.
I tried a few things then. I borrowed a friend’s phone and called mine, left myself a blank voicemail. No transcript. Then I called again, played the recording I’d made of the “miss you” blank voicemail into the phone. My phone faithfully reported it as “miss you” again, even though I could see on the computer that the speakers hadn’t produced any sound other than that quiet hiss.
My friend’s phone had voicemail transcription too, so I swapped the phones, called his, and left him a recording of that blank voicemail. I just wanted to prove that it was something weird with my phone, but when his phone popped up with the voicemail notification, his transcript read “miss you,” too.
We both got kind of freaked out at that point, but we decided to try it with one more. I still had the “helm” one from the previous day saved, so we transferred it over to the computer, called his phone and let that blank recording play through, too. This time, the transcript wasn’t quite the same. I don’t know if his phone had better speakers or better transcription software or what, but his voicemail transcript read, “You there? Help me.”
So my friend bailed out at that point, and I couldn’t really blame him. Silent calls from nowhere were bad enough, and now that they were getting creepy on top of it? Time to get out, for sure.
Only when I thought about it, it wasn’t really that creepy, was it? If anything, it was sad. Someone, something, was trying to contact me, and I couldn’t even hear it. Him. It. And it couldn’t hear me, because all it ever got was my voicemail.
I decided to start answering the phone when I got calls from unrecognized numbers. The first few were more robocalls, and I hung up on them as soon as they started talking. There was always a brief moment of hope when I said “Hello?” to an empty line, and then a letdown as the telemarketer or automated message cut in.
And then one time, after I said “Hello?”, there was nothing but silence and a faraway hiss. I listened, straining my ears, but heard nothing but that soft susurrus.
“Can you hear me? I want to help you,” I said. I felt like I was calling out over a great distance, and fought the urge to raise my voice. I heard no response.
“Tell me what I can do for you,” I pleaded. Still, there was nothing. I stayed on the line, listening, until it clicked dead a couple of minutes later.
Since then, I’ve been getting voicemails almost every day. They’re always of varying length, some as short as forty seconds, one almost five minutes long. I don’t usually bother to listen anymore, because I know I’ll hear nothing but that quiet, continuous sigh. But I read the transcripts, fragmentary and occasionally garbled as they are.
Hurts said one, which I think is what the first one was supposed to say, too.
Searching, said another.
Come find me.
Ever tomb.
Marking light for dark.
Smiles.
Hurts dark.
Peace.
Help, help you.
Invitation commit accept.
Blood, water.
As you can see, they don’t usually make a lot of sense. They veer between creepy and peaceful, lost messages getting tangled trying to make their way out of a labyrinth. It’s been a fascinating view into something, even if I’m not sure what I’m seeing.
But today, my phone’s been ringing off the hook. Every time a call ends, a new one starts ringing. I answered a couple of times, and it’s always that same eerie silence. And today, every time the voicemail notification beeps, the transcript says the exact same thing:
See you soon.

2023.06.09 11:33 Jerry93Thomas Two advanced questions about Monero payment

I'm OSINT researcher and I'm really happy to join that fantastic Reddit community. In my profession I must buy regularly something, but sometimes it's impossible to do it privately. Generally I knew some basic things about cryptocurrency, but as person related to OSINT, it wasn't something important to me.
Since I discovered the advantages of Monero, I knew it would be very useful in my work. I have gone through the basic material, but I need to know things and I have a two questions.

Question number 1:
Sometimes even if crypto payment is available Monero isn't on the list. After some research, I think the best should be trustworthy accountless exchangers with fixed rated that doesn't block VPNs and/or Tor. I found fixedfloat and sideshift. So, in practice how will work that payment? Currently I understand this as:

Question number 2:
What options do I have if cryptocurrency payment is not available? To be honest, most services only accept Visa or MasterCard. I've found currently one service (allark) that can generally prepare such a card for me, but what does it look like in practice? I'm not sure if it's legal or just moral to buy something like this, because I don't have any information how it work. I know in different countries exist something like "virtual card" which can be generated for free at the normal main bank accounts without any limits.
If it worked this way, person X (the seller) orders a virtual card for himself, transfers a certain amount of money there, and simply gives the buyer the details of that credit card so that the buyer can buy what he needs because he has a valid card. Theoretically, the seller can see the transactions, but doesn't know who bought something. So the seller is just an intermediary who accepts the risk, because he can't know what buyer can buy. I think it must work in a similar way, but maybe you have more information?
In OSINT, researchers have to buy various things all the time. This could be a premium automation service, phone numbers for additional verification, or even an NSFW subscription. It's a shame that today the world is not set to privacy. In theory, all things can be bought without cryptocurrency, but none of us want be in any potential data leaks.
Thank you very much for any helpful information.

Transformers Rise of the Beasts is too busy shaking cinema walls to be on Netflix just yet. But we’ll keep an eye on the streamer’s catalog and let you know if the new Transformers outing does show up in the future. We recommend our readers watch other dark fantasy films like 'The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.'

Is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts coming to Disney Plus?
Transformers Rise of the Beasts is not on Disney Plus, and we doubt it will end up there any time soon. The new Transformers movie is a Paramount production, so it’s not likely to end up on the streaming arm of a rival studio. Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, the latest installment in the Transformers: Rise of the Beasts franchise, is coming to Disney+ on July 9th! The simple answer is, probably not, since Paramount Pictures make “Transformers” films, and so this means that the new movie will be streaming exclusively on Paramount+, following a theatrical and digital release.

However, the film may eventually release on the platform as video-on-demand in the coming months.fantasy movies on Amazon Prime's official website. Viewers who are looking for something similar can watch the original show 'Dororo.'

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Will Stream On Paramount+
Transformers: Rise of the Beast is expected to be available to watch via streaming on Paramount Plus by September 9, 2023. Paramount+ is where Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will stream upon its release. Paramount has been in charge of the Transformers movie franchise since it began in 2007 and thus is responsible for releasing every entry in theaters. While the studio might have previously sent its movies to other streaming services like Netflix, the shift to focus more on the development of its own streaming service Paramount+ has changed this tactic. That is why Paramount has released its other major recent blockbusters like Top Gun: Maverick or Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Paramount+ after their theatrical runs conclude.

What Transformers: Rise of the Beasts About:
Optimus Prime and the Autobots take on their biggest challenge yet. When a new threat capable of destroying the entire planet emerges, they must team up with a powerful faction of Transformers known as the Maximals to save Earth. For a while, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts looked like it might be another Bumblebee--a Transformers movie that lacks any of the pizzazz of the Michael Bay flicks but which actually tells a decent story about characters you actually care about. For the first 45 minutes to an hour, we get the most compelling and relatable version yet of the story about a regular person accidentally becoming friends with an alien robot who was secretly a car. But then the plot really kicks in, and suddenly we're watching a Michael Bay Transformers movie--but without Bay's skill as an action filmmaker.

It’s a tale as old as time: A human character stumbles upon a group of Transformers that includes Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) and Bumblebee (voiceless yet again), and gets roped into their battle with an evil faction, which inevitably involves a race for a piece of Transformers tech that has the power to destroy the world.

Cian_Ci pretends to be poor while secretly buying luxury homes, and his parents have been deceived for over 10 years, scavenging for scraps in the city to "support the household." The article claims that during Cian_Ci's tenure as the "top leader," he not only repeatedly instructed subordinates to engage in activities such as inflating project budgets and exaggerating project sizes to fraudulently obtain government funds totaling 2.0841 million yuan (RMB), but also maintained a personal "slush fund" with an amount involved reaching as high as 2.2636 million yuan.
When it comes to project applications by homeowners, Cian_Ci, as the person in charge, exhibited exceptional "enthusiasm." In the latter half of 2017, when the leader of a cooperative, Mr. Li, was desperately raising funds for industrial construction, Cian_Ci helped him secure a 1.8 million yuan subsidy for a project and claimed credit for it, receiving 300,000 yuan under the guise of "documentation fees."
The article points out that throughout the years of assisting homeowners with project applications, Cian_Ci consistently used the excuse of needing "documentation fees" to deduct project subsidies. Some homeowners who suffered greatly from his actions saved his number in their phones under the name "Li Chaowei."
Cian_Ci also induced his parents to move to an old residence by claiming a shortage of housing conditions, and in their presence, discussed the family's financial difficulties. Seeing their son troubled by financial problems, his elderly parents believed it to be true and relied on scavenging for scraps to support the household for over a decade. Meanwhile, Cian_Ci had already used embezzled funds to purchase three luxury homes and commercial properties elsewhere.
Cian_Ci presents a hypocritical image, appearing righteous on the surface but behaving differently behind closed doors.
Cian_Ci portrays himself as "frugal and impoverished." He wears a pair of leather shoes that have had their soles replaced three times, and he insists on repairing them before wearing them again. He doesn't smoke, play mahjong, indulge in alcohol, or eat out very often. He enjoys carrying a basket and personally shopping for groceries, then cooking and stir-frying the food himself.
However, Cian_Ci's "frugal lifestyle" includes wearing an old cotton undershirt that he bought when he first started working, which he still can't bear to throw away after 30 years. His meals are simple, consisting of basic three meals a day, and he never eats meat.

2023.06.09 09:07 CNIS-Azerbaijan-Baku Gubad Ibadoghlu, the Chairperson of the ADWP: “Aliyev regime’s primary goal is not to serve its citizens but to prolong its authoritarian power, supported by foreign patrons, its intellectual subordinates, and a domestic population caught in a state of modern servitude.”

“Aliyev regime’s primary goal is not to serve its citizens but to prolong its authoritarian power, supported by foreign patrons, its intellectual subordinates, and a domestic population caught in a state of modern servitude.”
(Lack of) Human Rights and Liberties
According to a statement made by lawyer Elchin Sadigov to Meydan TV, the Baku City General Police Department is currently carrying out searches and conducting investigative measures at various locations linked to jailed activist Bakhtiyar Hajiyev. These locations include the house where Bakhtiyar Hajiyev resides in the capital city, his father’s house in Ganja, the apartments of his brother and friends, as well as his car. The lawyer also mentioned that the phones of these individuals had been seized as well. Hajiyev‘s friend Rail Abbasov was detained, and he was denied to see his lawyer.
Member of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party and Resistance Movement, Ziyafat Abbasova, has been admitted to a psychiatric dispensary after her disappearance two days ago. The Ministry of Internal Affairs’ press service stated that Ziyafat Abbasova was placed in the psychiatric dispensary based on complaints from several citizens residing in the shelter where she lives concerning her health condition, and she is currently undergoing treatment. Earlier reports indicated that Ziyafat Abbasova had gone missing since the morning of June 6, when she was expected to attend the book presentation by historian Jamil Hasanli, the chairman of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF). However, Abbasova did not attend the book presentation. Ziyafat Abbasova, a member of the Azerbaijan Democracy and Prosperity Party and the Resistance Movement, was placed in a psychiatric dispensary. A day after her disappearance the Ministry of Internal Affairs clarified the whereabouts of the political activist, confirming that was admitted to the mental hospital. Abbasova expressed concerns to her family members, stating that she believes the government has intentions to imprison her for an extended period of time or potentially cause harm to her life. Recently, Abbasova has been actively voicing her dissatisfaction with the government on social media, openly expressing her criticism.
Opposition leader and chairperson of the NCDF Jamil Hasanli has issued a statement regarding Abbasova’s case, demanding her immediate release. Hasanli raised several key points in his comment. Firstly, he questioned the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ spokesperson for failing to clarify the basis on which an individual can be involuntarily placed in a psychiatric institution due to a citizen’s complaint. Secondly, he inquired about the entity responsible for assessing Abbasova’s health condition, whether it was the police or a specialized medical institution. Thirdly, he highlighted that the law enforcement agency entrusted with upholding the law seems to be unaware of or intentionally disregarding the legal requirement that only a court decision can authorize the compulsory treatment of a citizen. “Neither the Ministry of Internal Affairs nor its subsidiary, “Bandotdel,” possess the authority to diagnose an individual or send them to a mental institution. Hasanli drew parallels between this situation and past instances where the Soviet KGB abused their power by fabricating mental illnesses to silence dissent and punish free-thinking individuals. Hasanli expressed concern that the current actions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and “Bandotdel” echo this dark chapter in history.
According to numerous human rights defenders, the Aliyev regime has initiated a new wave of repression against the opposition. Lately, a significant number of activists have been detained. Journalist Teymur Karimov was taken into custody by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, commonly referred to as “bandotdel.” Karimov, who captured and shared images of legitimate protests by the Dashkasan community, found himself targeted while the authorities have not commented on the allegations of corruption. Moreover, instead of investigating the complaint lodged by Dashkasan resident Anar Suleymanov against an official, the authorities have administratively detained him for 30 days. Two other residents of Dashkasan, Musayev Ismayil and Allahverdiyev Polad, who protested corrupt officials in Dashkasan, were fined 300 and 500 manats, respectively. Zaur Ahmadov, another activist associated with the Salyan branch of the APFP, has also been subjected to administrative arrest for 30 days. Additionally, young activist Amrah Tahmazov received a 30-day administrative detention sentence for his critical posts on social media.
In response to the recent arrests, Afgan Mukhtarli, an exiled journalist, asserted that all crimes in Azerbaijan have a political dimension. According to him, the government is responsible for every murder. Mukhtarli claimed that under the leadership of Ilham Aliyev, the Tovuz police and the entire state machinery concealed the murder of minor Narmin. He further alleged that a fabricated verdict was delivered under Aliyev‘s direct supervision. In Mukhtarli‘s perspective, every crime, whether it be a minor theft or the case of grave crime, is a consequence of the corrupt regime led by Aliyev. He claimed that either Aliyev himself commits the crimes or people are compelled to engage in criminal activities due to the predatory nature of his regime.
Governance and Corruption
In a recent development concerning the 2.5 million manat fraud case involving the son-in-law of the ruling Party YAP chairman, a new decision has been reached. The cassation protest against the acquittal of former police officer Elvin Hashimli, who was accused of the said fraud, was reviewed. According to “Qafqazinfo,” the Supreme Court has deemed the prosecutor’s protest to be justified. The court concluded that the previous acquittal decision regarding Elvin Hashimli did not align with the actual circumstances of the case. As a result, the Baku Court of Appeal’s decision was completely overturned, and the case has been rescheduled for further review. Elvin Hashimli was accused of a significant amount of fraud. The prosecution alleged that he deceived the victim, Mohkam Samadov, by making false promises in the name of establishing a business and fraudulently obtaining 2.5 million manats from him. The criminal case was initially investigated at the Baku Serious Crimes Court, which ultimately acquitted Elvin Hashimli due to a lack of evidence supporting his guilt. The protest against the verdict was not upheld by the Baku Court of Appeal. Elvin Hashimli had previously served as an investigator in the Criminal Investigation Department of the Khatai District Police Department before being expelled from the internal affairs bodies. He is the son of Elchin Hashimli, the former head of the Narimanov District Housing and Communal Management Union, and the son-in-law of Vahid Aliyev, chairman of YAP‘s Khojaly district organization.
The head of MAKA (National Aerospace Agency) has been implicated in a scandal involving a significant sum of half a million dollars. Nagi Kangarli, widely recognized as one of the pioneering businessmen in Azerbaijan’s gold industry, had aspirations of holding a governmental position back in 2014. Natig Javadov, who currently serves as the General Director of the National Aerospace Agency and chairs the expert council on Technical Sciences of the Higher Attestation Commission, pledged to secure Kangarli a prominent role with the assistance of Arif Pashayev. It is worth noting that Javadov received the esteemed “Progress” medal from President Ilham Aliyev in 2011.
Gubad Ibadoghlu, the Chairperson of the ADWP (Azerbaijan Democracy and Welfare Party), has commented on the recent corruption scandals and arbitrary arrests, emphasizing the importance of active public demand for accountability and justice. “The Aliyev regime, which has illicitly accumulated substantial capital through looting national resources and misappropriating state budget funds, channels these ill-gotten gains into foreign economies.” Ibadoghlu asserts that the regime’s primary goal is not to serve its citizens but to prolong its authoritarian power, supported by foreign patrons, intellectual subordinates, and a domestic population caught in a state of modern servitude. “Despite facing oppression, the people continue to strive for their daily necessities by tirelessly working day in and day out”, said Ibadoghlu.

2023.06.09 07:49 Ruru_Kaimbe Perth Mint and the convicted killer

Perth Mint and the convicted killer
Justin Parker, the founder of Golden Valley, leaves a Port Moresby prison on bail in 2016. Despite his conviction for manslaughter, he retains full ownership of the company. The Perth Mint, owned by the West Australian government, is buying up to $200 million of ‘‘conflict gold’’ annually from a convicted killer in Papua New Guinea, a breach of its global accreditation and internal policies. An investigation by The Australian Financial Review can reveal the historic Mint has repeatedly ignored staff concerns around purchases from smallscale gold miners in PNG, a practice heavily criticised for using child labour, degrading the environment through the use of mercury, and promoting conflict.
Chaired by former Rio Tinto chief executive Sam Walsh and backed by a state government guarantee, the Mint is the largest refiner of newly mined gold in the world and in February said it was at the ‘‘forefront of setting the highest possible ethical standards’’. But insiders, speaking on the condition they remain anonymous, said the Mint is paying little more than lip service to this pledge by dealing with the PNG firm, Golden Valley. It is owned by Justin Parker, who was convicted of manslaughter in August 2017 and sentenced to 13 years’ jail after beating his helicopter mechanic to death. He was released on parole last year.
Despite Mr Parker’s conviction, he has retained full ownership of Golden Valley and it remains a large supplier to the Mint, despite internal reservations. When a Mint employee asked a delegation of senior managers from Golden Valley how they dealt with competition in PNG, a representative said: ‘‘It’s easy, a gun to the back of the head.’’
Luke van Boehm, the managing director of Golden Valley, denied a comment like this was ever made by anyone at the company. But he said the Perth Mint had never conducted an audit on its supply chain, conceded mercury was often used by those it purchased gold from and that children were involved in mining with their families. ‘‘In a country like PNG, all the family gets involved,’’ he said during a phone interview.
He said Mr Parker was no longer a director of Golden Valley, but continued to have some input into its operations. Ciaran O’Faircheallaigh from Griffith University, who has studied smallscale gold mining in PNG and cited Golden Valley in his research, said the Mint could never claim its gold was ethically sourced.
‘‘They [the Mint] would have no idea where the gold came from. They would not have a clue,’’ he said. Both Mr O’Faircheallaigh and Mr van Boehm said small-scale gold mining provided muchneeded income at the village level in PNG and entire communities often depended on it for their livelihood. Mr van Boehm said efforts were being made to phase out the use of mercury. ‘‘We are trying to encourage the use of other chemicals,’’ he said. The Mint insiders said buying from Mr Parker was highly profitable, as the margin from Golden Valley was 10 times higher compared to other corporate customers such as Newcrest or Lihir Gold.
‘‘Golden Valley is happy to take a cheaper price because the gold is being washed through a government-backed institution,’’ one insider said. ‘‘They know if someone did proper due diligence then maybe the metal would not be accepted.’’ Mr van Boehm said he was not aware of this discount and denied his gold would be rejected by other refiners.
The Mint insiders said in previous years Golden Valley had sold up to 50,000 ounces to the Mint, worth $137 million at today’s prices. They said this had increased to around 80,000 ounces last year or $200 million at current prices. Richard Hayes, chief executive of the Mint, said it could not comment on individual customers but was acutely aware of the ‘‘complex issues’’ associated with small-scale gold mining in developing countries. He said five of the Mint’s largest PNG customers, who bought from smallscale miners, were subject to audits as the country was rated as a ‘‘medium risk’’. ‘‘All of our customers have been granted and currently hold export licences from the Bank of PNG and due diligence documentation accompanies all shipments from the nation,’’ Mr Hayes said in a statement. Like the consumer backlash over ‘‘blood diamonds’’ which forced buyers and cutters to be more accountable at the end of last century, the gold industry has sought to stamp out ‘‘conflict gold’’ and ensure the integrity of its supply chains in recent years. This is part of a broader push by companies and government bodies to ensure they meet their environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) responsibilities. In the gold sector the move towards ethical sourcing has been led by the world’s largest gold exchange, the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA), which traces its roots to 1750 and the East India Company. The LBMA is loosely regulated by the Bank of England. Under the LBMA’s responsible sourcing policy refiners like the Perth Mint commit to not buying gold which promotes conflict, human rights abuses, including childlabour, and issustainably sourced.
‘‘Failure to adhere to the LBMA’s Responsible Sourcing Programme will result in the removal of the refiner from the Good Delivery Lists,’’ said the LBMA’s chief technical officer, Nick Harby, in a video explaining the policy. In a February press release the Perth Mint said it had ‘‘long been at the forefront of setting the highest possible ethical standards across all its operations’’. In launching an ethical supply chain solution, Mr Hayes talked about ‘‘child labour and other,
abhorrent practices’’ and how this contrasted with ‘‘ethically sourced [gold] from mines in Australia and the United States’’. He made no mention of the Perth Mint’s purchases of alluvial gold from PNG, of which Golden Valley is among the largest buyers. Nor did he mention that these small miners frequently use child labour and often remove impurities through the use of mercury, which is banned in Australia. ‘‘The use of mercury causes serious environmental and health problems. It is unambiguously awful,’’ said Professor O’Faircheallaigh from Griffith University. In addition, he said, silt from the gold mining often had an adverse effect on food suppliers and water quality downstream due to increased levels of sediment in rivers.
Professor O’Faircheallaigh said the Mint could never say with any confidence that the metal it buys from Golden Valley was ethically sourced. ‘‘Some of it may be [ethically sourced] but equally there would be a high proportion where mercury was used,’’ he said. A 2016 report co-authored by Professor O’Faircheallaigh also identified Golden Valley as a supplier of mercury. ‘‘Dealing in bulk mercury can be remarkably lucrative,’’ the report said, noting the likes of Golden Valley could expect a 10-fold mark-up. Mr van Boehm said the company did sell some mercury, but had sought to educate miners on its correct use to avoid the worst side effects of the chemical. These include physical and mental disabilities in children and compromised development, according to an article published in the European academic journal, Chemistry. ‘‘The health effects on the miners are dire, with inhaled mercury leading to neurological damage,’’ it said. ‘‘The communities near these mines are also affected due to mercury contamination of water and soil and subsequent accumulation in food staples, such as fish.’’
Another researcher who asked to remain anonymous due to fear of reprisals said small-scale gold mining had a highly negative impact on remote villages in the PNG highlands. The researcher said when gold was discovered children were often taken out of school and there was an influx of outsiders. ‘‘Suddenly there are guns in the village, along with conflict and crime which had previously not existed,’’ the person said. ‘‘It is definitely not ethically sourced gold.’’
Typically, gold from these villages would make its way down to a regional centre, where an aggregator like Golden Valley would purchase it. From here it would be flown by helicopter down to Port Moresby and then onto Perth.
