What Is Transformers: Rise of the Beasts About?

Ill just drop my 2 cents here on each capcom series i've taken part of and why they now flunk.
Resident evil. Resident evil 4 set the beginning of the end in motion for the series. The frantic, tight fixed angles that i had come to truly adore were now gone forever in exchange for linear rail shooter style. I still played through it a few times though but did not enjoy it. Resident evil 5 was very much better than 4 imo, and i think 5's formula could have been a good one to keep around. 6 messed it all up though. I played the demo/beta and just said nope and never went back. Then 7 came and completely changed the formula AGAIN! This in itself, is a prime way to incite the wrath of diehard fans of the OG trilogy like myself. Coupled with the fact that they will probably never make a new classic style RE again, and that they, for no good reason, refuse to re-release the classic trilogy for modern consoles (yet they do for their other series, i have 3 different versions of DMC hd collection for xbx360 and xbxone) it becomes easy to see why i have just lost all faith in capcom and i have not nor will i ever play 7,8, 2 and 3 remake etc.
Speaking of devil may cry! This series made up for resident evils shortcomings, at least until somewhat recently. Every title was great until Dmc5. I absolutely hated playing as V and they force you to use him through too much of the game. I would have overlooked and forgiven this if they had included lady and trish as playable characters in dmc5 SE, but they didn't! Completely unforgivable. Dmc4 SE had them, so why not 5? Subsequent releases in a series are supposed to be improved, and with more features! Not the other way around. That was the final nail in the coffin for me and capcom. I am not even including the failed DmC reboot in this because i am not acknowledging its existence lol
Now for DisHonorable mentions.
That trailer for that new dinosaur game where they hinted at a red haired girl named regina but it turned out it wasn't even dino crisis. This disgusts me. They're openly trolling their fans whom they also depend on for money. It's like pulling up to a drive thru just for the clerk to then spit in your face and proceed to throw a bunch of eggs and soft drinks at you and your car.
Megaman legends. Im not mad about this one, i just think it has great potential and should be revived
Monster hunter world and rise. Bad controls and game mechanics, too many text walls, not enjoyable in the least. The quality of these games MIGHT have been acceptable on ps1/ps2
Bottom line/follow up, they change their games too much. Trying to be like other game series and companies. Trying to be good at everything but instead being good for nothing.

“Well if I thought politics was boring before, I certainly don’t think that now!” I said with a chuckle.
Aeva finally tore their eyes away from the holoprojector long enough to look at me. “How can you be so calm about all of this? Your people are going to war!”
I grinned maliciously. “The Yaleya Conclave has no idea what they’re getting themselves into. Humans have been practicing warfare for as long as we’ve been recording our history. Sure, size may be an issue, but that doesn’t mean that we’re completely out of the fight!” I proudly explained.
Aeva didn’t look convinced. “Well, how do you know?”
“Well,” I started, “first, they don’t even know if we even have a home planet, let alone where it is. And even if they did, we have enough defenses in system that they probably won’t even get close to it. Second, if I know United Terra’s Space Command, then they’re probably planning a preemptive strike to cripple the enemy before the Yaleyans can even try anything.” Aeva was still not looking convinced. I smiled, “And besides, the galaxy at large doesn’t even know about half of the ships that Terran civilians are allowed to know about. Trust me, humanity will be fine.”

Well, the day that humanity had been dreading has finally arrived. We were about to partake in our first interstellar war. I was pouring over the mission briefing that I had been given, shock written all over my face. This plan that command has authorized is a bold one. If they think that everyone is coming home after this is over, they’re crazy. I looked up from my tablet to survey the scene in front of me.
The hangar that I was in was massive, large enough to store hundreds, if not thousands of the biggest mechs that humanity could produce. It was a beehive of activity, with deckhands moving from place to place. I looked up at the massive cargo mech that was carrying a rack of single-seater fighters and interceptors, the ground shaking as it stomped past before setting down its load of aircraft. I saw my platoon slowly filter into the staging area for our portion of the operation. I looked down at my watch. Three minutes late.
When all my marines finally made it, I stood up and made my way to the holoprojector at the center of the staging area. “Sloppy, marines, you were three minutes late!” I said in my sergeant voice. “That means when we are done with this mission, I expect each and every one of you to give me three hundred pushups!” There were some murmurs of dissent from the group. I quickly wheeled over to the offending group of marines. “STOW THAT SHIT MARINES WE ARE AT WAR NOW! AND THAT MEANS BEING ON TIME TO BRIEFINGS! DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR?”
A loud “Sir, yes sir!” rang around me as soldiers straightened their postures.
“Damn right I do! For Operation Hidden Phantom, we will be the tip of the spear, so listen up, I will not be repeating myself!” I turned on the holoprojector. It showed the Yalayan capital ship, the Indomitable Crusade. “This is our target, the Indomitable Crusade. Our objectives are to infiltrate the ship and find and destroy the computer components that control the early warning system and the sensors suite for their entire fleet. Intelligence has pinpointed those systems to be here and here,” I said pointing to two different points that started to glow when I touched them. “In the event that they aren’t where intelligence has suggested, then our mission is to find them, and put them out of commission. We have also been encouraged to destroy as many secondary systems as possible, but the sensor array and early warning system are the priority. After we achieve our objectives, we are to signal to command to send in a mech boarding party from the Failure to Communicate’s carrier group. For this mission, we have been given access to the newest and shiniest toys.” As I said that the hologram changed to a depiction a sleek one-seater aircraft/spaceship combo. It was also conveniently sitting in the hangar next to us. “We are being given access to the single-seater F-200. I have been told that it has been outfitted with some of the best stealth technology that humanity has ever come up with.” I turned to my marines. “Any questions?” I asked.
A marine timidly raised his hand. “Sir, what kind of support will we have?”
“Until we take down the sensor arrays of the Indomitable Crusade, we won’t be getting any. We will, however, be given stealth based exo armor and enough explosives to level half of New New York. Command has assured me these measures will be enough for us to get in and do our jobs so everyone else can do theirs. Any other questions?”
Another marine held up their hand. “Sir, the briefing says that the Indomitable Crusade has the best shields the Conclave have to offer. How are we getting past that? And what’s our infil?”
“Excellent question marine!” I exclaimed, proud that someone had actually read the mission briefing. “Intel says that the shields don’t even activate unless something is coming at it quick enough. This prevents it from using energy deflecting harmless space debris. Today, we will be disguising ourselves as harmless space debris in the solar system that the Indomitable Crusade is currently.” I saw the marines looking around at each other. They were clearly excited for this mission. “As for how we’re getting in, we will stick to the hull and cut through it until we get into the maintenance shafts, where we will then move to the air vents. This should give us plenty of time and help us avoid the xenos on board.” I looked at my watch. “It looks like that’s all the time that we have for a briefing, so get yourselves suited up and ready to go! We leave in ten minutes!” I shouted as the marines gave a hearty oorah. I couldn’t help but feel proud of my marines. “And may God have mercy on those poor xenos.” And with that, we all made our way to where we would pick up our stealth exo suits.

High Commander Tussus
It has been a long time since we have had a good war. Our people have gone soft and compliant in a way that not even compulsory military service could fix. We needed a war to ensure the strength of our people and the future generation, but we couldn’t declare war on a species in the Galactic Community without risking the ire of that irritating body of pencil pushers and bureaucrats.
Then the Terrans arrived, like sunshine on a stormy day. They were always on the edge of policy making and made themselves an easy target by their secrecy. As soon as their secret came out, high command saw this as a perfect opportunity to strengthen our people in the furnace of war. At this point, we were just waiting for the Terran targets to be given to us by command. This should be easy. They are so small that they can’t even defend themselves without their precious suits.
“High Commander,” said my chief engineer.
“Make your report,” I said irritated that he brought me out of my thoughts of conquest.
“We’re reading some very minor hull breaches in maintenance hallway seventy-three B.”
I paused. “Are we leaking air?” I asked.
“No High Commander. It seems like we are not. And anything that would be moving quickly enough to cause a hull breach would have been deflected by the shields, so it can’t be debris.”
“Is there anything on the cameras?” I asked.
“No, High Commander,” was the response.
I waved my hand. “Send a maintenance team to see what the issue is.”
“At your command, High Commander,” he said. “Maintenance team Delta 32, report to maintenance hallway seventy-three B and report on a possible hull breach.”
I leaned back in my chair. Despite the issue being resolved, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread come over me, almost like an omen of ill things to come.

Tourism is a small but important part of Kashmir’s economy. However, in the name of tourism, the government should not put the fragile and already-strained natural resources and public infrastructure in the region under even more pressure, lest it lead to a complete destruction of the beautiful valley, which is home to 7 million people.
Four years after India made Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) its youngest Union territory, the region is expected to receive around 2 crore (20 million) tourists this year. This was revealed by the lieutenant governor of the Union territory Manoj Sinha in April while laying the foundation stone of a medical college in the outskirts of Srinagar.
Sinha said that the number of tourists J&K is set to receive during this year would break all previous records of tourist influx into Kashmir.
Will the Union territory, especially the ecologically fragile Kashmir valley, be able to accommodate such a huge number of tourists?
What about the amount of waste 2 crore tourists will generate? Does the Union territory have the infrastructure to treat this waste scientifically, considering that the number of tourists visiting is more than twice the population of the region?
Do we have scientific waste management systems in place in Srinagar and other tourist places of J&K?
In this article I will be explaining all this with facts and figures.
Shrinking farmlands and tourism
Tourists who visit Kashmir are fascinated by the natural beauty while they move around on the Jammu–Srinagar highway (National Highway 44). They are often seen taking pictures in the saffron fields of Pampore or with the mustard flowers elsewhere in the valley (which bloom in abundance around the spring season— March to April).
Does the Union territory have the infrastructure to treat this waste scientifically, considering that the number of tourists visiting is more than twice the population of the region?
When tourists visit Pahalgam, they take selfies near the apple trees that dot the landscape on the way to this beautiful tourist resort.
Imagine what will happen if the beauty of this landscape is allowed to perish? There will be no reason for tourists to visit Kashmir. More importantly, it will become well-nigh impossible for Kashmiris to live in Kashmir.
The government’s own data reveals that agriculture landholding in J&K has come down drastically. As per a report published on 10th agriculture census (2015–16) by the financial commissioner of revenue for the erstwhile state of J&K, the total number of operational holdings in the state was 14.16 lakh, operating on 8.42 lakh hectare of land.
This was 14.49 lakh holdings operating on 8.95 lakh hectare of land in the 9th agriculture census ( 2010–11).
This means that in a mere five-year period, J&K had witnessed a decrease of 2.27 percent in the number of holdings and a decrease of 5.92 percent in the operating area under agriculture.
The average holding size in J&K during the 10th agriculture census (2015–16) stood at 0.59 hectare. This has come down further in the 2021–22 agriculture census whose final report is yet to be made public.
As per the 2015–16 agriculture census, around 84 percent of farmers in J&K were marginal farmers and 11.29 percent, 4.10 percent, 0.78 percent and 0.04 percent farmers had small, semi-medium, medium and large land holdings respectively.
Marginal farmers are those who have less than 1 hectare of land holdings, small farmers have 1–2 hectare of land holdings, semi-medium farmers have 2–4 hectare of land holdings, medium farmers have 4–10 hectare of land holdings, and large farmers have more than 10 hectare of land holdings.
In the 9th agriculture census, the average land holding in J&K was 0.62 hectare and between 2010–11 and 2015–16 agriculture censuses, there has been a decrease of 0.03 hectare of agriculture land holding.
The unofficial figures say that the agricultural land has shrunk further in the last five–six years and is now only around 0.5 hectare. If this downward spiral continues, I believe that in the next 25 to 30 years, 90 percent of the rural population in J&K, especially in the Kashmir valley, will become landless.
We will see only concrete structures on our agricultural land. It will have serious consequences for our agriculture economy and tourism will be severely impacted as well. There will be more floods as our wetlands and lakes are choked and the built up concrete area doesn’t allow water to seep into the ground.
Unscientific waste disposal and illegal mining
In future, shrinking farmlands will not only impact our agriculture and tourism but will also have a direct impact on management of our municipal solid waste.
In J&K, 90 percent of the urban local bodies, including the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and smaller councils and committees have no official landfill sites. Waste is not treated as per the Municipal Solid Waste Rules, 2016. Even in Srinagar city, the only garbage dump site located at Achan Saidpora is choked and emits an obnoxious smell, especially during summer months.
Enough land isn’t available in our towns and cities to set up scientific landfill sites. In hilly towns, this is even more of a challenge, especially in Ramban, Doda and Udhampur, where municipal solid waste is dumped unscientifically in forests or waterbodies.
During the last decade, the SMC has not been able to acquire even 50–60 acre of land for creating a landfill as an alternative to the overburdened Achan Saidpora site.
In 2017, the then deputy chief minister Nirmal Singh, who was also the Minister for Housing & Urban Development Department (HUDD), while responding to a question from a legislator of Srinagar, Mubarak Gul, said on the floor of the J&K assembly that a committee had been constituted under the district magistrate of Srinagar to look for land to create a new landfill site in Srinagar but the committee could not find even 10 acre of land to set up the new landfill site.
It is a well-known fact that Srinagar and a majority of the districts in J&K have small landholdings and most of the land is already occupied by shopping complexes or housing colonies and finding large patches of land to set up landfill sites or garbage dump sites is a herculean task.
This is the reason that a majority of our water bodies, such as lakes, wetlands, rivers and streams, have become waste dump sites and this author had to move a formal application before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to ensure a clean-up of the Doodh Ganga river in the Srinagar–Budgam area.
This waterbody is being used to dump solid waste at multiple locations by local residents. The Geology and Mining Department has auctioned this stream for riverbed mining with effect from September 2021 to 2026. The project proponent is mining as deep as 10 metre while only mining till 1 metre depth is allowed.
Huge cranes and JCB are also used for extracting sand, boulders and gravel, which is in violation of the J&K Minor Mineral Concession Rules 2016 and the guidelines of J&K State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA).
In addition, the SMC and a few other government bodies have set up around 13 wastewater pump stations on the banks of Doodh Ganga, which flush out untreated water and sewage into the stream in violation of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. Keeping these violations under consideration and after providing the material facts, the NGT imposed a penalty of ₹35 crore on the government of J&K in October this year
In March this year, a ₹3 crore penalty had already been imposed. The money was released from the coffers of SMC, the Department of Geology and Mining and the municipal committees of Chadoora and Budgam.
In the Poonch district of Jammu, the local municipality is using the Poonch river as a garbage dump site. In this case, too, a few months back this author had to move an application before the NGT. Notice was issued to the district magistrate, Poonch and the pollution control committee, asking for a detailed report from them. The case is listed for hearing in July.

The cave is also adjacent to the magnificent Kolahoi glacier and the waste acts like a hot knife through butter, trapping sunlight and cutting through the white snow and ice.
People visit the cave for spiritual reasons, but when they engage in anti-nature activities by throwing plastic, food and other wastes in the pristine glaciers and mountains, it leads to environmental destruction.
In Srinagar city alone, around 500 metric tonne of waste is generated daily and this quantity goes up during the tourist rush in summers. Unfortunately not even 10 percent of this waste is treated.
Same is the case with other tourist places of J&K such as Gulmarg, Sonamarg and Pahalgam. When 2 crore tourists visit J&K in a year, how will authorities manage them? Do we have scientific landfill sites? What about the carbon footprints these tourists will leave?
So it is advisable that the government must first concentrate on ensuring that all tourist places have a scientific waste management system in place. Plastic must be completely banned. No food items packed in plastic wrappers should be sold at tourist resorts.
The pilgrims coming for pilgrimage to the Amarnath cave should not be allowed to carry any plastic packed food materials and the number of pilgrims visiting the shrine should also be reduced, as recommended by Nitesh SenGupta Committee report.
Tourism is a small but vital part of Kashmir’s economy. But we must not let unregulated tourism put an unbearable strain on the natural resources and infrastructure of the region. By doing so, we may earn quick bucks for a few years, but it will ultimately result in Kashmir becoming a trashbowl.

He met his now wife on Instagram. She was new to the religion, and they made her dump her high school boyfriend to join and she couldn't be close to her non religion friends. Weirdly enough we grew up with her grandma in our congregation. So they had that connection and started dating. Both she and my brother were lonely and found each other when they were really needing companionship.
Well I think they fooled around because they ended up doing a really quick courthouse wedding and she had my niece within the first year of marriage.
My SIL is really hard to like. I tried really hard to make her feel like a part of the family, but pretty early on she set the precedent of being super entitled and only interested in what I could give/do for her.

This was a shock cuz 1. How we were raised 2. He always seemed like perfect dad/husband who did everything in his power to take care of his family.
She literally called everyone she knew and told them this while my brother was at work. So when he comes home and finds out, it just kinda sealed everything for him. Hello, I'm looking for a little advice regarding late payment terms on my invoices to clients.
I'm a sole trader, most of my clients are great and pay on time. I do have 1 client that stipulates the dates I can send in invoices and i'm supposed to get paid every 14 days. This particular client uses an accountancy firm to handle their payroll and to pay their suppliers. They rarely pay on time, even though they have set the payment date terms themselves.
I've been chasing payment for my last invoice since last week and i've so far been given the excuses of 'you were missed off the pay run' then I was told 'you've been paid today' 72 hours later the payment had not cleared ' there was a problem with their software, it will be in your account by morning' It is morning and it's not in my account.
I have late payment terms on my invoices: Please note that late payment will incur a one off late payment fee from the date payment is due of £40 and interest (at 8% over the Bank of England base rate) for debt recovery costs under the Late Payment legislation.
Even though they rarely pay on time, i've never actually actioned the late payment fees. This is where my questions come in - How long do I have to give them to pay the invoice with the late payment fees added? Am I able to keep adding interest to this if it goes unpaid or is it a one off fee? As they use an accounting company who is liable for the late payment fee - my client or the accountant? What do I do if they refuse to pay the late fees?
Occasionally, having clients pay me late can mean I struggle to pay the mortgage and bills, especially if it's a project i've been working on which has not allowed me time to take on smaller jobs to keep the cash flowing. It's incredibly frustrating having to chase payment, especially when they are already using the work i've produced for them!

TL;DR: I don't think I'm attracted to my girlfriend anymore, and I'm scared to break up with her.
Her and I have been together since the end of October (8 months~), and we've known each other for a year and a half, having dated briefly once before in late '21 and breaking up after a month and a half. We made amends, became friends, and started talking again after that, leading to now.
I just don't know how much I want to have a relationship with her, anymore. Lately, I've gotten to explore life a lot more; I've gone to big concerts, flown across the country, gotten up to some dumb shit with the goons I call friends. Most of that without her. She's done some of that on her own and with her friends, too, but while she still feels the connection, I don't. And I hate that, because why should I feel differently? Why do I feel like I want something or someone else, but she's so set on me?
More than anything, I don't want to hurt her. I know if we broke up, she would be devastated. She's been all-in on me ever since we first dated, and I was for a long time, too. But, about a week ago, it got to the point where I've started looking around. I've thought about other girls I know are single; girls I've seen on Tinder that match my type and look like I could have a lot of fun with. Meanwhile, her pictures and her gifts sit around my room and I can't begin to describe my guilt. So I uninstall Tinder, move on for the night, and I still come back a week or so later.
Ultimately, what do I do? I've got the weekend off of work, and she's coming over to spend the night with my family and I (I live w/ my father, for reference). When I'm with her, it's not so bad. Then the more I think about it alone, the more I think it's all wrong. I don't want her to hurt, but I know I can't avoid that if we end things. I truly feel sick and I'm scared about what comes after if we break.

Here's everything we know about the upcoming live action adaption of "Fallout" by Bethesda Studios for Amazon Prime soon to be released as well:
The series showrunner Jonathan Nolan is a huge passionate fan of the franchise, and is going to be the man responsible for leading the series after his previous work on the divisive but fan favorite series "Westworld" on HBO which had a star studded cast
Our lead main protagonist will be a ghoul who will be portrayed by iconic actor Walton Goggins who we've seen perform brilliantly in Justified, Westworld, as well as Sons Of Anarchy :)
Kyle Mclaughlin from Twin Peaks is set to be a recurring main character for the series but his role hasn't been revealed yet. Take your guess really?
The show will be using mostly practical effects for the sets, props, outfits, makeup and the aspects that can't be done in practical effects will have enhanced cgi to touch up on those special effects.
Fans have already spotted the NCR logo on some flags in behind the set photos, a ghoul wearing a vault 32 uniform with a cowboy hat and some massive practical effect Brotherhood Of Steel armor
Johnathon Nolan has said the series will capture the awe and wonder of the franchise with the alternate history technology side of a new 50s Era but will also keep the darkly comical, and strange sense of humor the series is quite known for too.
Johnathon Nolan and the creative team have been given free reigns by Amazon Prime and the team at Bethesda to go as bonkers, insane, creative and at times horrifying and gruesome as they want to with the series. They want to make sure they capture the vibe and tone of the series accurately to it all.
No word on if Ron Pearlman who's been a franchise mainstay in the Fallout Universe since the first title has a role or any sign of part for the TV series tbh. It would be kind of strange not to have him in the TV series since he's a huge part of the games also.
I'm thinking that they might show a teaser or trailer for the TV adaption on an anniversary date of the franchise or possibly at a gaming digital event.
Ghouls will be fully developed in terms of makeup, and practical effects. They have slightly enhanced cgi to make some more elements fully develop.
In one of the behind the scenes photos you can see a fully functioning pipboy on a vault dwellers arm which lights up, and has all the iconic parts.
Super Duper Mart and Red Rocket Station sets have been fully developed accurately to the games.
The narrative of the series will be an original story within the universe of the games. They didn't want to adapt any of the games narratives so that it can stand out on its own for new audiences but to also entertain and surprise the long fans of the series.
Vault 32 will be the main vault being used for the TV series.
Fingers crossed that a "Gary" homage or tribute will be added to the series because that would be so much fun and absolutely hilarious for audiences.

OK, so this takes some explaining, but hopefully it’s worth your time. Spoilers, obvs.
In 2021, Leos Carax released his debut English language movie, written by Ron and Russell Mael of Art-Pop legends Sparks and starring Adam Driver, Marion Cotillard and Simon Helberg. It received great acclaim, winning several awards, but also left many cold. It’s such an odd film, but there’s a fantastic explanation as to why it’s such a difficult movie.
There are two stories running in parallel. One is that of the comedian, the opera singer and their gifted child. The other is the story of how the filmmakers wrote this movie. It’s an allegory for its own creative process.
The character Annette is the movie Annette, and her three parents are different elements of the screenwriters’ creativity. Henry McHenry, played by Adam Driver, is Sparks’ humour and pop sensibility. The accompanist, played by Simon Helberg, is their musical talent. Ann Defrasnoux, played by Marion Cotillard, is their genius.
These characters’ fates determine what kind of movie this will be, and it doesn’t end well for any of them.

For those that don’t know, Sparks have made funny and catchy pop music for almost 50 years, influencing artists as wide ranging as Bjork, Beck, Sex Pistols, Erasure and Red Hot Chilli Peppers, making great music to this day yet somehow have remained obscure.
Leos Carax said this about this about his collaboration with Sparks: “We had 80 songs and only kept 42. There were many versions of every song, depending on where the story was going.”
So during the 8 years of development, pieces were added, removed and altered, and this concept is embedded into the movie itself. If you look at the quotations, additional music and archival movie footage used throughout, something interesting connects it: there’s an uncanny number of references to creative works that were changed into something different, moving it beyond from the artist’s initial vision. Just like ‘Annette’.
*‘The Crowd’ by King Vidor This movie from 1928 is used during a montage of Ann’s performances. Its original release was delayed because the movie studio was displeased at the lack of a happy ending. At their insistence, seven alternative happy endings were filmed.
‘Till the clouds roll by’ While Henry is babysitting, the TV shows a musical number from this 1946 Judy Garland movie. The song, ’D’ye love me’, was filmed by a different director (her husband Vincente Minnelli) but then cut from the final movie.
‘Oceans’ Footage is used from this French nature documentary which was distributed by Disney Pictures. The final cut had 20 minutes of violent footage removed to make it palatable to a young audience.
‘Rogue one’ We see this playing at a cinema while Henry rides past on his motorcycle. The Star Wars spin-off had extensive reshoots with new scenes, including a new soundtrack and ending.
‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ There are several visual parallels between ‘Annette‘ and the first feature-length Disney movie. It was originally conceived as a comedy piece, with a continuous run of jokes from the dwarfs. In later drafts, scenes were removed in order to focus more on Snow White and the Evil Queen, and less on the comic relief.
‘The Night of the Hunter’ The shot of Ann’s body falling to the depths of the ocean calls back to this 1955 American Thriller. The screenplay was by James Agee, based on his own book, but director Charles Laughton rewrote most of the script without credit. This was partly because the story features an evil preacher, highly controversial at the time, so the changes were made so that he would appear unordained.
‘Bluebeards Castle’ This opera was completed in 1911, but not taken seriously because of its single act structure. It was modified in 1912 and a new ending added in 1917.
‘National Brotherhood Week’ by Tom Lehrer This is the song that goes “and the Catholics hate the Muslims, and the Muslims hate the Catholics”. The musical satirist would often update the jokes in his songs at live performances.
‘Symphony No. 2’ by Gustav Mahler This was composed reusing elements of the composer‘s first symphony,
‘Otello’ by Verdi This was written between 1879 and 1887. Many drafts exist between the libretto first being written and its completion, with notes and letter published showing the evolution of the work as the music demanded changes to the text and vice versa.
‘Carmen’ by Bizet This was altered several times during the rehearsal for the first performance. As such, the vocal score from March 1875 shows significant changes from the version of the score sold to the publishers, which is in turn different to the orchestral score. Nobody knows which version was originally performed.
‘Madam Butterfly’ by Puccini First completed in 1904, this was withdrawn after a disastrous premiere. In total Puccini wrote five versions of this opera.
‘Norma’ by Bellini When composing this opera, Bellini wanted it to be performed by star soprano Giuditta Pasta. To entice her, he offered to retouch or even change the character completely to suit her.
‘Symphony No. 4’ by Brahms The debut performance was a scaled-down preview played on two pianos to a small audience of friends. Despite going on to be a classic, it was panned by the audience, with critic Eduard Hanslick describing it as “being given a beating by two incredibly intelligent people”.
‘La traviata’ by Verdi This opera was envisioned in a contemporary setting, but the authorities insisted it be set in the past.
‘Mother Courage and her Children’ by Bertold Bretch This 1941 play includes the quotation “War is like love, it always finds a way”, which likely serves as inspiration for ‘True love always finds a way’. For it’s second production in 1949, Brecht revised the play to make Mother Courage less sympathetic, because despite rave reviews, he felt that critics misunderstood the piece.*
These works aren’t necessarily being evoked because of their stories or themes, but because of how they were changed. Leos Carax and Sparks are showing us that the movie we’re watching is inextricably tied to the method used in creating it. In other words, it’s not just an incidental bit of trivia that ‘Annette’ had several drafts, it’s core to the understanding of the movie.
With the release of the Unlimited Edition of the soundtrack album, Sparks gave some insight into a previous draft, and it helps us to better understand the final movie. It includes a handful of demos and unused songs which show a very different trajectory for Henry McHenry. Instead of destroying his career by offending his audience, he’s instead met with indifference because falling in love and having a child has taken away his edge as a performer. We therefore know that Henry’s comedy routines were rewritten, and this fact can be used to explain a lot.
The title of Henry’s show is The Ape of God. This is a term for Satan that originated from the Middle Ages, meaning that he impersonates (or apes) godly things to make people do evil. Encyclopaedia Britannica describes it as “an evil who attempts to imitate God through spurious, malicious creations that he interpolates for the divine creations”. The word “interpolate” means “to insert something (of a different nature) into something else”, which is what the screenwriters are doing by reworking these scenes. The Henry McHenry that we see isn’t the character as originally envisioned - he’s a rewrite, and this explains the uncomfortable anti-comedy of his routines.
One of Sparks’ defining characteristics is humour, with a distinctive style of wit that’s been a constant presence in their music throughout the decades. Their songs feature colourful characters and clever pop-culture references, but with ‘Annette’ they go in the opposite direction, filling it with sadness at every turn. If you look back through Sparks’ catalogue of songs, finding something without an element of joy or humour is rare. They’re a “fun” band, but that element of fun is mostly missing in ‘Annette’ - this is fundamentally different to the Sparks we’ve seen before.
This was explained by Leos Carax when asked how the movie was reshaped from Sparks’ original screenplay.
“The only changes I made were with the writing. It was only a storyline without characters. The brothers live in this Sparks bubble, which is pop fantasy. There was a lot of irony. Irony in a cinema is a danger, I think. It has a tendency to make everything less crucial, less real. It’s a bit too easy for cinema, especially today. I had to make that irony into something else. We had to really create Henry as a character.”
Here’s the theory: Ron and Russell wrote a comedy that was true to Sparks, then employed Leos Carax to impose restrictions on the rewriting process. These were the changes necessary for the band to achieve their dream of making a true art house tragedy.
