Too much light threatens environment and health, studies show
What is going on?
Although it may not receive as much media attention as other types of environmental deterioration, light pollution has significant effects on both human health and the ecosystems of Earth.
Light pollution levels are thought to be rising by 10% a year, according to astronomers at the National Science Foundation's NOIRLab (National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory). In a city where there has historically been 250 stars visible at night, children born today will only be able to see 100 stars by the time they are 18.
Why is this important?
Connie Walker, a scientist at NOIRLab, explained to Capital News Service that increasing light pollution represents a lost cultural heritage.
“Just think about (Gustav) Holst in creating the musical composition, ‘The Planets’, or (Vincent) Van Gogh, who did ‘The Starry Night.’ I mean, this is not just astronomy, it’s art. It’s if we basically cut ourselves off from access to the night sky, we’re really damaging the opportunities for future generations and the inspiration that provides,” Walker said. “And so it’s like cutting off an appendage or something, we’re losing part of ourselves. So it’s really a kind of imperative for us to take action and try to protect the night sky.”
Light pollution, however, poses a major threat that goes beyond cultural heritage. According to Harvard University researchers, it can increase the chance of getting a variety of cancers by interfering with our circadian rhythms and sleep cycles, for example.
What effect is this having now?
Millions of Americans are missing out on much-needed sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that at least one in three Americans do not get enough sleep each night.
For animals, the consequences of light pollution can be even more dire.
Many animals have evolved to use the moon and stars to guide their way in the night. Sea turtle hatchlings use the moonlight to find their way to the ocean, but in light-polluted areas, the newborns become disoriented and may actually crawl inland. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission estimates that light pollution results in thousands of sea turtle deaths every year.
Many communities in the southeastern United States, from Florida to the Carolinas, have ordinances requiring people living on the coast to turn off lights during sea turtle nesting season.
Light pollution is also a likely culprit in what some scientists have called the “Insect Apocalypse.”
In recent years, global insect populations have plummeted, with as many as 40% of all species around the globe experiencing declines. For example, species that rely on bioluminescence, like fireflies, are unable to find mates among all of the competing lights.
Other species that rely on the moon and stars for guidance, like moths, can spend the entire night in disoriented wandering. Some species mistake light bouncing off pavement for the surface of a body of water and mistakenly lay their eggs in the street.
Why is this such a challenge to combat?
Assessing light pollution’s growth doesn’t show up well in satellite data.
It is difficult to do longitudinal studies because of the dramatic changes in satellite imaging quality over the years. Even the modern sensors are largely unable to pick up the blue light that is the most biologically disruptive component of light pollution.
This is why NOIRLab created the Globe at Night Program, which collects light data from ordinary people around the world. Participants rate their ability to see stars in the sky from wherever they find themselves.
How can Maryland make a difference?
One easy adaptation is making sure that lights are properly covered so that the light is aimed down and not shooting off towards the night sky.
The International Dark-Sky Association’s D.C. Chapter promotes general dimmer and warmer lighting in addition to better protected lights. Baltimore has been getting brighter with more electronic billboards, while some towns, like Pittsburgh, have been moving toward darker lights.
In Washington, D.C., last month, the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History launched an exhibit titled “Lights Out: Recovering Our Night Sky.” The temporary exhibit features over 100 photographs, 250 objects and interactive experiences underscoring the importance of nighttime darkness.

2022.09.30 09:21 Affectionate-Meat-98 PSA For South Carolina & Florida members that find/have found squirrels because of Hurricane Ian (instructions)

With the Hurricane Ian still raging and on its way from Florida to South Carolina we would like to remind everyone that if you find a baby/litter it would be best to get into plastic container with air flow holes and bedding that is fleece blankets or old T-shirt (a towel can cause injuries) and to put a heating pad (set to low) under half the container if available (if not you can do a homemade version or hot water bottle)
It’s best to not offer anything to eat or drink including formula as the risk of aspiration that will lead to pneumonia is very high without training.
Second: best to avoid a box in favor of a plastic tub because cardboard dehydrates
and finally: it would be ideal to attempt to return any storm babies tomorrow as long as they are uninjured. Mother squirrels usually have 3-5 dreys so she has somewhere to retreat to when her nest comes down in a storm; but she instinctually does not risk her own life by trying to get babies collected (unless they are still alive after the sun is up again and the weather is ok again).
Homemade heating pad (https://imgur.com/gallery/VxXRv7K)
-Example housing by setup for the night (https://imgur.com/gallery/U9VNwZn)
If baby is
1 completely uninjured
2 hasn’t come into contact with any other animals
& 3 isn’t dehydrated or thin
You could try to reunite with mom (but only if it obviously is not injured or dehydrated or anything else) tomorrow as Mom Will likely be in the area and out after the storm tomorrow looking for any babies she has lost in the storms
To attempt a reunion ideal to put baby outside with old tee shirt or fleece -instead of that towel- and a homemade heating pad of rice sick or water bottle in a plastic container (as cardboard dehydrates & towels injure wildlife)
It’s best not to offer anything to eat or drink -including water or formula (to avoid risk of aspiration like this fall 2021 baby https://youtu.be/xvV1jOrLH_0 ) - and to put the baby/litter out with warmth and a Bluetooth speaker under the plastic tub playing squirrel calling mom once the weather is nice again; but Definitely watch for cats or other predators;
PLEASE only attempt any reunion if the baby is completely uninjured to begin with: If anything, Usually moms actually only recollect healthy babies anyways: so trying a reunion just delays needed care if baby is not in perfect condition
If the baby injured it’s best to get it to a rehab with vet access asap and the proper care supplies & medications on hand so I’d suggest trying your state list first for Florida members https://myfwc.com/media/5423/licensedwildliferehabilitatorsbyregion.pdf to line up placement With a rehabber asap
& ahnow.org if you’re effected in South Carolina; but it’s not sorting by distance anymore (so you’ll just have to scan “results” and “additional results” for your local area now unfortunately…). We are definitely across all of SC though so please reach out if you can’t reunite!
If you were in Florida for the storm or are going to impacted in South Carolina: you are in our thoughts & prayers and we hope the storm is not to hard on you, your local wildlife, or your homes & infrastructure

2022.05.13 00:44 shalafi71 Odd question: Anyone know where I can order live clams that are native?

Ordered some "Florida Clams" from eBay without paying attention to the genus and species. Yeah, they're really Asian Clams and they're invasive. At this point I doubt throwing them in my ponds will make matters worse. They've been here since at least 1960. Still, not gonna do it. Those animals are staying in my tank and water feature.
Also got a couple Florida Shiny Spike mussels in the same order. Those are native but I only got 3-4.
End game is to throw filter feeders in my ponds out in the woods. Be neat to have something that cleans out the algae and clears the water. Maybe something I can harvest for food one day? Ideas on ordering native mollusks?
I found a native list of clams from the government. Guess I could look for species on eBay or Aquabid, but I have no idea what would be best for filtering. Anyone doing this in their pond(s)?
While we're at it; Any reason I can't order live crayfish and chunk them in my ponds? Be fun to harvest them occasionally, and I'm sure the locals coons will love it. Not sure how robust the fish population is, just threw native, mosquito-eating fish in there last October.
EDIT: Anyone know a good spot to go find my own? I'm all over the Blackwater, Cold Creek, etc.
EDIT EDIT: NOW I'm reaching the brochure linked above that says Corbicula fluminea (Asian Clam) is invasive but "common throughout Florida". Suddenly doesn't seem like a big deal to use them. Thoughts on this last bit? I'm sure I'll get overrun with comments calling me a monster, don't care. I'd welcome serious conversation on the morality of using them. "Invasive" on one hand. "They're already everywhere" on the other. Also, these were harvested in central Florida.

2021.07.16 19:40 uncleleo101 FWC Red Tide Information

I work for FWC at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in St. Petersburg where our red tide labs are that process all the samples from the state. I wanted to write this post to clear up some information about the current red tide bloom affecting Tampa Bay.
The basics: Red tide is a marine algae called Karenia brevis. Under normal circumstances, red tide is always "out there" in the Gulf of Mexico, and is one of thousands of different kinds of marine algae that make up the Gulf ecosystem. The problem is, well, us. Pollution. Once ocean conditions are right (nutrient levels, currents, water temp, dissolved oxygen, and other factors), the red tide algae begin reproducing at extremely high levels, creating "blooms". Once these blooms reach high enough levels, fish and other marine life begin to get brevitoxicosis (brevetoxin is present in red tide cells) and can die once those levels get high enough. When these seasonal blooms arrive into inshore waters, they usually encounter lots of pollution in the form of agricultural and urban runoff, which contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorous, which is a food source for red tide, causing the blooms to grow much worse on our coasts and estuaries. Blooms are not at all uniform and are quite "patchy" which makes monitoring and sampling difficult.
What we know: We know that the Piney Point wastewater releases are having an impact with the severity of the bloom. There are lots of nutrient sources in and around the bay, so it can be hard to separate that out in sampling and data, but we know that it's definitely fueling this current bloom. Piney Point didn't cause red tide in Tampa Bay, but once seasonal red tide made it into Tampa Bay, the bloom exploded. The 100's of tons of dead fish are not just devastating because of the loss of life and smell, but it's important to get the dead fish out of the water because as they decay, they will provide the red tide bloom with even more nutrients -- so as you can see, it starts to create a runaway, self-feeding cycle.
The perfect storm: Red tide has a salinity tolerance. If it encounters water that is brackish and not salty enough, the algae will die and a red tide bloom won't occur. A perfect storm has occurred where Tampa Bay had a very dry winter and spring, with hardly any rainfall in May at all. This made Tampa Bay much saltier than it normally is, because there was not nearly enough freshwater flowing into the bay from area rivers and creeks. Add to this the huge releases of nitrogen-laden water from Piney Point and we had the perfect storm for a huge red tide bloom. In our red tide sampling, we categorize a red tide sample as a "high" level when there are at least 1 million Karenia brevis cells to a liter of water. Samples from inside Tampa Bay are showing levels of 10 million, which shocked some of our scientists.
What you can do: Demand environmental protection and much stricter regulations from your elected leaders, especially the Governor, as he is effectively FWC's "boss". The problem with Piney Point is that it was allowed to occur in the first place. As a high population conservative state, we have quite lax laws for developers and industries. In the vast majority of cases, development will win the day over conservation, at least in Florida. If you fertilize your lawn, stop doing so yesterday. Do you want a big green lawn or a beach full of dead fish? Once a red tide bloom occurs, especially a very severe one like what's happening in Tampa Bay, there's not a whole lot we can do, other than cleanup dead fish.

I hope this helps clear up some things, I'll try to answer questions if y'all have some.

2021.05.12 17:21 hawkeyeontario1 HOW DO YOU BECOME A FALCONER IN FLORIDA?

HOW DO YOU BECOME A FALCONER IN FLORIDA?
Have you ever noticed the beauty of hawks, falcons, eagles, and owls flying overhead? Have you ever experienced the nuisance of pest birds on the beach or on your commercial property? There is a natural connection between these types of birds that has become a hobby, a functional practice, and a way of life.
Birds of prey are used by bird control companies to manage and control the overpopulation of pest birds, like seagulls, in a particular area; this process is called abatement. The specialists who train these predatory birds to hunt and scare away these pests are called Falconers. However, the art of falconry is also a huge hobby for hunting enthusiasts. Predatory birds like hawks, owls, eagles, and falcons are also used to hunt mammals like rabbits and squirrels for sport.
So how do you become a falconer? Where can you get falconry experience in Florida? Is falconry even legal? Here’s everything you need to know!

HOW DO YOU BECOME A FALCONER IN FLORIDA?

What Is Falconry?
Falconry is the process of hunting wild animals in their natural state and habitat by using a trained bird of prey such as an eagle, falcon, owl, or hawk. The animals that are hunted vary in size and environment depending on which type of raptor you choose to hunt with. These animals can include squirrels, rabbits, voles, mice, fish, and even other birds. There are several species of predatory birds that are used for this practice, but they are all conditioned and trained to catch wild game.
Which Birds Are Used for Falconry?
Despite the name, there are many species of birds rather than falcons that are used for this purpose. Here are the different types of birds used for falconry:

What Is the Best Bird to Start Falconry?
The most common bird for a beginning falconer in North America is the Red-Tailed Hawk. The Harris’ Hawk is also a common bird used for beginner falconers. The Red-Tailed Hawk is preferred because of its ease of breeding in captivity, inherent strength, and capability to hunt prey like hares and rabbits.
Is Falconry Legal in Florida?
Although falconry is legal in Florida, you must obtain a Federal and State license. Your State Game and Fish Department can provide this to you, excluding in Hawaii, because it is illegal to hunt game using a raptor there. Keep in mind that each state has its own regulations and guidelines that meet or surpass federal standards.
How Do I Obtain a Falconry License in Florida?
Since all raptors are protected by Federal, State, and International laws, anyone interested in falconry must obtain specific permits and licenses before practicing this skill or acquiring a bird to train with. This licensing process can take a while, as it includes a written exam and obtaining signatures from a sponsor. Some states further require hunter education courses as well. How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a Falconry License?
In Florida, falconers must pass a written exam and be at least 14 years old. Additionally, they must score at least an 80% on an exam covering the following:
  • Laws and regulations
  • Raptor identification
  • Raptor physiology
  • Raptor behavior
  • Raptor ecology
  • Raptor healthcare and diseases
  • Raptor facilities
  • Falconry equipment, terminology, and techniques
In Florida a falconer can progress through the classes of falconry permits (Apprentice, General, and Master) as they gain more experience. The difference between these classes is the type of raptors one can obtain, and the number of raptors they are allowed to house and have under their care.
How Much Does It Cost to Get a Falconry License?
Getting into falconry can be an expensive hobby. Not only do you need to pay for your permits, but you also must consider the costs of appropriate facilities, equipment, food, and veterinary bills. Just to get started, you may need to put down $2,000 to cover the cost of books, a five-year license, an annual capture permit, annual hunting licenses/stamps, starting equipment , enough food to supply your bird for a year, and permanent and travelling raptor facilities. You may also need to invest an additional $600 to $1,000 in radio telemetry equipment to track your raptor.
How Long Does It Take to Become a Falconer?
Becoming a falconer will take time, but it depends on the individual’s determination, dedication, and ability to obtain a sponsor. This process could take anywhere from six months to seven years, depending on whether you want to become a Master level falconer or stay as a Beginner. Raptors are live creatures that require a significant amount of time training and caring for. You’ll need to dedicate 365 days a year training them. You will also need to consider how long it may take to get a sponsor. If you have young children or a busy career, you may not be able to have enough time for this hobby, as it is more of a lifestyle.
