2023.06.09 15:31 Clbengel Wife surprised me with tix to Sneaker Con in DC next month

It was a truly awesome birthday gift from my wife and I'm beyond pumped to go. Just curious for any tips for anyone that has gone to the Sneaker Con in Washington DC in the past. Has anyone found reasonably priced heat? I'm into Jordans and Dunks for the most part, but am definitely not looking to pay an arm and a leg. We're going on Sunday and am hoping to come away with a few pairs. Thanks!

2023.06.09 15:24 mattlodder Partial Performance and Tax Law

There's currently a fascinating discussion happening amongst university lecturers currently taking part in a marking and assessment boycott as it relates to the legalities and tax implications of pay deductions for partial performance.
Colleagues taking part in the MAB are facing heavy deductions to salary, even 80% and above, for periods of weeks, where the only work not completed is a few hours of marking. Per HMRC's website :
Deducting pay You do not have to pay employees who are on strike.
If workers take action short of a strike, and refuse to carry out part of their contractual work, this is called ‘partial performance’. If you refuse to accept partial performance, you must tell employees that:
they should only attend work if they fulfil their contractual duties if they do not fulfil the terms of their employment contract, you do not have to pay them If you do accept partial performance, you must still pay employees for any work that they have done.
This obviously leaves the employers in a bind, from their point of view, as they neither want to accept partial performance (otherwise members would down tools entirely), nor deduct wages proportionally to the work actually missed (because that would reduce the deterrent effect on those minded to boycott assessment).
The clever solution some employers have come up with is to try and square the circle, calling the heavily reduced payments they are making "goodwill payments" for "voluntary work" - maintaining the fiction that they do not accept partial performance in order to allow them to not pay employees for work actually done. The payments are labelled as that on payslips, but subject to usual PAYE and other taxes.
The cat has been well and truly set amongst the pigeons by a post on an HMRC forum by an advisor, who agrees with a UCU OP that ex gratia payments are by definition not for work, and thus not taxable! Obviously this is rather interesting, though no tax expert seems to agree that this is a reasonable interpretation of what's happening (usually ex gratia payments are part of settlement agreements).
So, I wonder what the Reddit hive mind think. Obviously employers think this is One Weird Trick to deduct a greater proportion of salary than is reasonable whilst maintaining that they don't accept partial performance. I'm almost certain, of course, that the payments for "voluntary work" are not tax free. So what do you all think? Is there case here that universities legally need to choose either a refusal to accept partial performance at all, or make deductions which are actually proportional to the work not undertaken? At least one law firm thinks that what unis are trying to do here is unwise.

2023.06.09 15:24 CountLugz How do you express cover, depth, height in your combat maps?

[DND5E]I use Foundry for local play and it's great. The players get to see the map on my big screen tv and it makes combat setup very easy.
However, one thing I miss from using 3d terrain and miniatures is the clear indication of height, cover, depth, etc. The players are instantly informed of what they can hide behind or where to go for a height advantage.
Sadly, this is where foundry has fallen short for me. Obviously by the nature of the battlemaps on a TV, all maps will essentially appear 'flat'. But I'm wondering if there are any solutions to this via modules, artistic tricks, map creators that specialize in this, or any other way that helps players immediately recognize 3d function on a 2d map?
Honestly what I would truly like is a map that behaves like a crpg, with a more isometric view that can go flat when needed but otherwise conveys everything that 3d terrain would. I know there's the 3d canvas module but I'm a bit concerned about the performance hit it will entail.
Any suggestions?

Navigating Tough Times: 10 Strategies to Boost Sales When The Going Gets Rough
In the challenging business environment, maintaining sales momentum can seem like a daunting task. However, with the right approach and strategic mindset, it's possible to turn adversity into opportunity. Here are ten effective tips to help increase sales during tough times.

Assertively Pursue Opportunities

In challenging times, a proactive and assertive approach is critical. Don't shy away from asking for business when meeting potential clients. Show them your eagerness to provide solutions.

Highlight Your ROI and USP

Position your product or service as a solution to a problem, rather than a luxury. Show potential clients the unique selling proposition (USP) and the return on investment (ROI) that your offerings provide. Making your product a 'need' can drive sales even in difficult times.

Maintain Customer Satisfaction

Never lose sight of your existing customers. Regular communication can make them feel valued and less likely to look elsewhere. Keeping your customers happy is a cornerstone for sales sustainability during tough periods.

Build Your Prospect List

Consider building your prospect list by leveraging credible databases of decision-makers in your field, such as A high-quality list can open up opportunities and streamline your sales outreach.

Distinguish Yourself from Competitors

Ensure your prospects understand what sets you apart from the competition. Highlight your unique attributes and strengths, reinforcing why choosing your business is a smart decision.

Respectful Competitor Comparisons

While it's essential to demonstrate your superiority over competitors, remember to do it respectfully. Present your comparisons factually and professionally, maintaining your brand's integrity.

Ramp Up Marketing Efforts

During tough times, visibility is key. Continue to promote, advertise, and market your business relentlessly. The goal is to stay in front of potential customers through consistent marketing activities.

Encourage Client Referrals

Referrals can be a gold mine for generating new leads. Ask your satisfied clients for referrals without pressuring them. A simple, honest request can generate leads without compromising relationships.

Stay Positive Amid Adversity

Maintain a positive attitude even during tough times. A positive outlook can inspire your team, attract customers, and help you navigate challenges more effectively.

Establish Yourself as an Industry Expert

Share your knowledge and insights about the industry on social media and other platforms. Being seen as an expert in your field builds credibility and can attract customers who value your expertise.
While navigating tough times can be challenging, these strategies can help maintain your sales momentum and even uncover new opportunities. Remember, resilience and innovation are the keys to sales success during difficult periods.

2023.06.09 15:20 stragan Yet another eCPPTv2 Review

- If you're entering this field, eCPPTv2 is not for you. Try eJPT. With the exception of the exam, the course is still free.
- If you have some experience, e.g., you know what HTB is, you regularly practice on the platform, you have some knowledge of web application/network security, but don't have much real-world experience, then go for it. You'll get a grasp of what kind of different areas are generally covered when performing a penetration test in various areas, and it will force you to write an actual report. But it won't, and I emphasise *won't*, make you a professional, highly-skilled hacker. The course is basically an introduction to the real world.
- If you're already working as a pentester for some years, it is tough to recommend. You might expand your general knowledge in areas you don't often encounter, and discover some tips for your cheat-sheets. If you're looking for a challenge to step-up your skills, this is not the way.

Hello there! I'd like to summarise my experience with eCPPTv2 course and exam and hopefully provide you with an idea if this certification is worth your time and money.

I have been a full-time pentester for about four years. As for the technical side of my day-to-day job, I have experience with web/mobile/infra testing, code reviews, redteam engagements etc. etc. Before that, I was a full-time programmer (developer if you want) for about the same time.

I decided for eCPPTv2 for several reasons:
- I needed some certification anyway due to some customer requirements and future legislation.
- From the experience of my colleagues, the materials were decent.
- I went through some of the eJPT materials as they are free, and I liked the labs.

Materials & Labs
I only got through some of the materials. I went primary for what I thought was necessary for the exam. Therefore, I skipped the wifi stuff, metasploit, partially powershell, and maybe some other minor areas.
I think that the slides do a decent job at explaining the given topics. Sometimes the amount of information can get pretty overwhelming, though. It sucks that you can't (officially) download the slides. Especially for someone who takes the course as a part of his/hewhatever career and knowledge development, the slides might provide a good reference in the future.
I'm not a fan of video-based materials in general but I watched them anyway. The topics were nicely explained, and one can see how the various tools and techniques work before trying them on your own.
On the flipside...
Materials should be reviewed and updated. You will find a few broken links, tools not available for download anymore, or demos presenting really old tools. Not a big issue in the end, but still, I wouldn't expect something like this in a course you pay over 700 bucks (for a year).
Sometimes I found the order of the modules confusing. Something like this happen several times:
- Topic A is explained.
- Lab is followed. You exercise topic A (and topic B).
- Topic B is explained.
No idea if this is by design, but I don't like it. If you want to do labs on your own and get stuck, you can end up thinking, "What the hell am I missing? I tried everything I just learned". Well...Maybe you didn't try something that wasn't explained yet.
As for the labs...
I liked them anyway. Labs are mostly narrowly focused, with well-written walkthroughs if you get stuck. Don't blindly follow walkthroughs, though. Always think about different approaches, what would you do if X or Y wasn't working, or what tool would you use if tool Z wasn't available.
Labs are the place where you should take notes and make cheatsheets. Full stop. Do it.
If there is something I didn't like, then the fucking VPN connections. Countless times I encountered connection drops, which made me pull my hair when I had to execute some kill-chain for the third, fourth time. Moreover, the target machines got a different IP address on every restart, forcing me to edit all my noted commands and payloads every time.
Also, there are small tests (quizzes?) you can take after completing a set of modules. Fuck them. Really. There is no point in bothering with them at all.
Reporting is discussed very briefly, in my opinion. It gives you an idea of how to structure it, a general idea of its content, and some references. Nothing more, really. I think they should go deeper. The exam requires you to write an executive summary and provide a description, recommendations and details for each finding. I can imagine that people who have never written such a document may struggle with this. Everyone has their own style when writing reports. It needs time, practice, and feedback before you brush it. But maybe they should provide you at least some idea on how to think when writing reports and provide some proper feedback after you submit it at the end of the exam.
Why I have such a problem with this is the fact that the course is named "Penetration Tester *Professional*". As I learned very soon, the report you provide to your customer is the most important part of your work. Your customer won't sit next to you to admire how cool, smart mega-turbo-hacker you are. You are helping your customer to find security issues and provide guidance on how to remediate them. This is basically what you do as a professional penetration tester. I feel like this fact should be emphasised more in the course.
I realise the points above might be just the result of my frustration, but sometimes I couldn't help myself to stop thinking, "Guys, people are fucking paying you for this course. Why can't you fix this and that".

Exam - Testing
It took me about six months to go through the materials (please note that not all of them as mentioned). I mostly studied for about two hours in the evenings after work and during the weekends. If you don't have a full-time job and a girlfriend, you can probably go through all of the materials in about half a year. My (not-really) educated guess is that the exam covers about 60-65 % of the materials.
My two cents:
- Don't overthink. The problems you will face when exploiting the targets and gaining root privileges are very CTF-like. Everything is simple and straightforward.
- Enumerate. Make some cheat-sheet for proper enumeration and follow it. As mentioned, the problems on the exam are not that difficult, just take your time to look for stuff.
- In the end, I felt like the exam is all about pivoting. Practice it in the labs. Understand how to route networks and how to forward ports. I used metasploit throughout the exam, and it was sufficient for it.
- Don't stress about buffer overflows. Take your time to understand it, do labs and take notes you can follow. If you do it properly, the actual exploitation will be a matter of copy-paste. I guess I won't spoil anything when I tell you that you don't have to worry about the advanced topic (very briefly talked about in materials) like beating ASLR, SEH-based overflows and others. It's a buffer overflow in its simplest form.
- Luckily, in comparison with labs, I had no issues with VPN connection or stability during the exam.

Exam - Reporting
I finished the report in about two days, but I had two major advantages:
- I've already written a dozen of reports before.
- I have a collection of findings I could re-use in the report with minor changes.
In cases when I needed some inspiration, I usually looked at findings in Nessus database ( and expanded on it.
You might find repository useful if you need to see how reports are generally structured and written.
Today, we have the privilege of using ChatGPT. Be careful here. Don't blindly copy/paste its output! Always verify its results, get inspired, and put together your own version.
The report was reviewed in about three days. Got a response that I'm missing some details in the description of buffer-overflow exploitation. After submitting the report again, it took another three to four days to review it. A friend of mine was waiting almost a month, so I was pretty lucky.
I spent about 60 hours doing the exam, including reporting. From my point of view, the two weeks you have in total is plenty of time to finish the exam.

That's it. Have a nice day.

2023.06.09 15:19 peach-ily Admin Pro-Tip #437: Don't Tell Your Players to 'Fuck Off And Die'

In today's instalment of "Things You Probably Shouldn't Do as an Admin of a MUD Game," we have a real gem that should be obvious, but clearly isn't to some people. Today's lesson: Don't tell your players to 'Please fuck off and die.' I know, I know, it's a shocker.
This might seem like common sense, much like not sticking your fingers into an electrical outlet or not attempting to ride a wild bear. However, we've learned that common sense can often be as rare as a sober dwarf in a brewery.
Remember, as an admin, your words carry weight. They can forge alliances, end wars, and yes, even hurt feelings. It's like wielding a mighty, double-edged sword. One side can slay the dragon, and the other side can accidentally cleave off your foot if you're not careful.
To all the admins out there, remember: you're not just game runners you're also building communities, and sometimes you might be the only thing standing between harmony and your game withering and dying as everyone undergoes a mass exodus.
Until next time, may your servers be stable, your players respectful, and your keyboard never far from your fingers.
Admin Pro-Tip #438 Preview: Never use 'rm -rf /' as a solution to your game's bugs. But that's a tale for another day...

2023.06.09 15:19 MikaElyse8954 Found a cat - best option to find it’s owner?

Hello, all!
I am just writing in hopes for some advice on how to might go about finding the owner of a missing cat.
My friend and I were walking back from downtown TC last night, and at 10:30pm we found a kitten on the corner of 14th street and division. Across from the Speedway.
The cat does not have a collar on, but it is very very well groomed. Its coat is shaved short all the way up to the tip of its tail where it’s left as a fuball. Kind of like Simba from Lion King. It’s hind legs are shaved the same way, where the leg kind of meets the ankle. Fur is a light and dark brown/beige and white. Its a really pretty cat, very nicely manicured and taken care of obviously. Albeit no collar or anything. So it’s obvious it has a home and the owners take very well care of the cat.
It ran up to us and was whining and looked very confused on its whereabouts and would not stop following us. It was about 10:30pm last night so we brought it inside because it was running through the street and traffic.
It had been whining profusely to leave, so we brought it back to the spot where it found us just in hopes that maybe it did actually know the area, but it still appeared confused, scared and lost, and as we tried to leave it just stared at us leaving.
We brought it back to the house and it’s been trying to leave all night, trying to get out the doors and windows and continues to do the same thing this morning. We got it food, water, but not sure what to do at this point.
My friend just moved into her house so we’re hoping we can find out what to do with the cat. The cat has already ruined a few blinds trying to get out of the house. It clearly wants to leave but this area is obviously very busy and the cat did not know where it was last night. But it is very sweet.
My friend also made a few posts on her social media so hopefully that fares well.
I feel really bad for the cat and we don’t know what else to do. Hopefully it is chipped and the owners can go about finding it that way but we really need to find its home.
So I’m wondering, is there any reliable ways of going about the missing cat and finding its owners? For this side of town? I’ve never had to deal with this before so I’m clueless on what to do.
Thank you.

2023.06.09 15:19 jrmb242 Where to find Conan Exiles rp/erp partners?

Hi guys.
Do you know some good side (or Discord channel) where I can seek some (e)roleplaying partners in Conan Exiles? The thing is I have some specific story/setting in mind and I'd like to post an ad about it to describe what I want to (privately) roleplay, so people who are interested in it can contact me and we can do such events.
I could not find any such channel or webpage for Conan Exiles. Most of them just advertise _the whole servers_ what is not what I want. I don't want to play the game on some server with wide-community. I want to privately rp with someone, topics which interests us both. On a server which I can create just for that (or we could use his for that).
